From parties to premieres, Kimberlee Oo brings us the weekly red carpet wrap-up.
The Oscars are always the event of the year and 2013’s spread certainly didn’t disappoint, bringing lots of thrills (and Jennifer Lawrence’s spill). While stars like Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, Daniel Day-Lewis and Adele took home little gold men, it was also a night of wins on the red carpet. Sure, there were the usual glittery sequins and OTT ball gowns but a few contenders definitely stood out.
Naomi Watts
The Best Actress nominee sent Twitter into overload when she took to the red carpet in a dazzling Giorgio Armani Prive gown. Naomi always exudes an understated elegance and she certainly stepped up in this custom frock. The dark silver sequins work perfectly with her creamy skin and blonde hair, while the asymmetrical cut and peekaboo shoulder show off the Australian star’s sexy side.
A messy updo, minimal jewellery (there’s only so much sparkle one can wear!) and a pretty pink lip all work together for an Oscars outfit that’s sure to go down in fashion history.
Jennifer Lawrence
Is there a single person out there who doesn’t love Jennifer Lawrence? The down-to-earth 22-year-old not only gracefully tripped up the stairs, but also gave one of the best press conferences we’ve ever seen. (“What went through my mind when I fell down? A bad word that I can’t say. That starts with F.”)
Shots and speeches aside, Jennifer absolutely nailed it on the red carpet. As the face of Dior, there was never any doubt that she’d look flawless but her Haute Couture gown was even better than expected. The pale pink voluminous dress offered just the right amount of puff, and the bodice was complimentarily simple. A backward necklace sets the trend for back jewellery that’s sure to follow in the next coming months.
Stacy Keibler
A surprise best dressed contender, George Clooney’s leading lady turned heads in a metallic number by Naeem Khan. The slinky sheath showed off Stacy’s curves while the sequins created the perfect optical illusion. The high halter works well given Stacy’s height and the black belt breaks up the glitter monotones. But it was the back – delicate sheer chiffon falling down to the waist – that really took her outfit to the next level. Pinned retro curls and Lorraine Schwartz drop earrings turn Stacy from former wrestler to vintage Hollywood star. And George Clooney just completes this picture-perfect ensemble.
And now onto the after-parties. The nominees and presenters often opt for a quick costume change, while all the other stars come out for a chance to party at some of the best events of the year. So who was there?
Nina Dobrev
The Vampire Diaries actress looked absolutely stunning at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Party at the Pacific Design Center. Also wearing Naeem Khan, Nina stepped out in a black-and-white baroque gown, featuring a high cut front and a low scoop back. The print emphasizes her tiny figure, while the monochrome colours work well with her golden tan and dark hair. A high ponytail keep her overall look young and casual.
Naomie Harris
Rose wasn’t the only fashionista at the Vanity Fair soiree – Skyfall star Naomi Harris gave her a run for her money in a seafoam evening dress from Monique Lhuillier. There was a shortage of princess gowns on the red carpet this year with lots of stars opting for slinky metallics, so it was nice to see Naomie in some tulle and lace. The draped drop shoulder is so effortlessly sexy, and her sideswept locks add to her just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-look-this-good effect. After all, what else would you expect from a Bond girl?
