5 Ways To Be Your Own Publicist

5 ways to be your own publicist

A few weeks ago, Lindsay Lohan sat down with Oprah for an hour-long interview for the OWN network. This is considered to be part of Lohan’s big career comeback and a real recovery for the recovering addict. ”I feel whole again,” she told Winfrey during their sit-down on OWN, “and I have such a desire to want to keep this feeling and stay this way, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes.” We don’t think you should take any career tips from Lohan, but we can learn a lesson about being your own publicist from the actress.

Finding the right opportunities

Lohan could have done a number of interviews but she chose Oprah, which was a very smart way to go (because it is also landed her a reality show). It didn’t feel like Oprah was cornering her or beating up on her. It took place in a gorgeous room in New York City where Lohan is beginning her fresh start. This is another smart brand move.

Watch what you say online

In an attempt to make this a real comeback, Lohan has not been saying anything online that could get her in trouble. Our digital imprints are such an easy way to get ourselves in trouble. One misstep and you can really kill some opportunities for yourself. Do not complain about work on social media, be too casual or represent your company in any way that could be construed as negative.

Own up to yourself

Lohan came clean about a lot of stuff during that interview. She was very honest about making mistakes. She showed her authentic self which is something she hasn’t done in a very long time. That is going to help her reconnect with her loyal fans. Jason Molika of The PRbreakfastclub wrote, “We can never think for a moment that it is ok to hide the truth. If you are part of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), you adhere to the Code of Ethics. Once you are labeled as dishonest, it’s pretty hard for anyone – a fellow pro or the media – to trust you again.”

Look your best

Lohan has made some very bad clothing choices in her time but last night she looked great. It was a very simple, clean look. Her hair was back and she wore minimal makeup. She looked normal for the first time in years. PR experts know that appearance impacts how others perceive us.  Because we weren’t horrified by her outfit choice, we were able to pay attention to her words.

At an event hosted by Ann Taylor and Marie Claire, Features Editor Lea Goldman discussed the power of executive presence—a force that shows people we are capable of being leaders. The three components that make up executive presence are communication, gravitas, and appearance. That last one is a big one. According to Goldman, executives say appearance counts for 60 percent of your executive presence. “The single biggest mistake women make [in work attire] is dressing too sexy,” said Goldman. Lohan has done that many times during court appearances and it has destroyed her credibility.

Don’t rely on your past success

Lohan is really trying to start over and she isn’t relying on her past achievements to help her do that. She wants to establish herself as an actress now. A big rule in PR is be even better than your past successes. You are never done. There is always room for improvement.
