Top trends from Milan Fashion Week
Italy’s fashion week presented Spring/Summer ’14 collections from Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Karl Lagerfeld, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace and more. Known as the ‘sexy sister’ to New York, London and Paris, Milan pulled all the stops out, showing sports-chic looks, monochrome minimalism and signature bustiers, prints and micro-minis.
Bust out
Milan followed New York’s lead with the crop top trend, but upped the sexiness stakes by working in strategic cut-outs, sheer panelling and detailed embellishments. Salvatore Ferragamo showed us the new workwear – tailored suits layered over peekaboo bras, leaving little to the imagination. Emilio Pucci showed off lots of skin in tiny leather bustiers, and Versace reworked the classic bandage dress to give us cleavage to the max.
Let’s get physical
Sportswear took a turn in the spotlight with mesh tops, loose hoodies and wet-look hair popping up show after the show. The trick to this trend is to style the sporty pieces with feminine opposites – look at Marni’s caps and baseball shirt worked back with a waisted maxi skirt and Prada’s football legwarmers teamed with shift dresses and structured bags.
Art attack
Prints were on another scale in Milan, with designers using the clothes as the canvas. Miuccia Prada was inspired by New York graffiti, Missoni’s hero dress featured a graphic seaside scene painted onto a simple asymmetrical dress, and Jil Sander’s patchwork print looked like wearable artist’s palette.
Floral follow-up
Already all over the London shows, florals quickly followed through to Milan. The Italian update featured super-charged blooms in bright shades like red, lime green and tangerine as well as adornments on bags, shoes and hair. Girly girls should look to Giorgio Armani, Alberta Ferrerti and Dolce & Gabbana.
