Trending: Slip dresses
There is something delectably retro about a slip dress and right now designers and the high street alike are harking back to 90’s grunge with their interpretations of the nearly naked dress.
The great thing about a slip dress is that it offers endless styling opportunities. Essentially the most basic form of a dress, there are countless ways to make it new and fresh; invest in one that you really love and, like your faithful ankle boots or beloved biker jacket, it will become one of the hardest working items in your wardrobe.
Layering is at the heart of taking a simple dress and transforming it into a great Autumn/Winter outfit. Take this version from House of Hackney; the midi length and wine coloured hues are bang on trend and worn alone it is perfect for a casual look for a warm day. However, add in a lace body underneath and layer a soft mohair cardigan over the shoulders, cinched at the waist and you create an easy, laid back yet interesting look.
A simple white button-down shirt under this pale grey & pink plaid slip from James Perse will add a touch of schoolgirl insouciance to a shorter style or alternatively pair with leather leggings and a cropped black knit for a tougher feel. The bias cut means the slip dress will hug your curves in an effortless way and chunky knits or even this seasons sweatshirts are a great way to dress down nearly naked styles such as Topshops satin versions. The key is to aim for effortless chic rather than being overtly racy.
For the ultimate revived grunge look layer a velvet slip dress such as this luxurious style from Asos over a grey t-shirt. Swap the Doc Martens for ankle boots to soften the look, add lashing of kohl eyeliner and muss up your hair for a super sexy undone look.
