Best Dressed: Screen Actors Guild Awards
Quietly tucked away in between the excitement of the first-ceremony-of-the-year-Golden-Globes and the potentially-most-prestigious-awards-ever-Oscars, it can be all too easy to lose the SAG Awards. However, our fashion radar picked up some pretty spectacular looks at last nights awards. Thanks to an array of sheer overlays, fabulous florals and sumptuous velvets the ladies in Los Angeles put the SAG Awards firmly on the map.
Ok, we know it’s meant to be ‘save the best til last’ and everything, but we’re afraid we physically just can’t wait any longer to talk about Lupita Nyong’o in Pre Fall 2015 Elie Saab. Oh be still our beating hearts. With a deep V neckline, long sleeves and a completely inspired floral watercolour design the 31-year-old actress struck the perfect balance between sexy, classy and fashion forward (a combination we didn’t even realise we needed in our lives until last night). As if her glossy red lips, Sophia Webster Coco pumps and Fred Leighton jewellery weren’t enough, Lupita also accessorised with oversized geek chic glasses to present the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor. Stylish and practical, they no doubt helped her sidestep the awards ceremony landmine that is struggling to read an auto-cue coherently.
Oh, and the 12 Years A Slave actress also changed in to a shorter, dance-ready version of the bloomy ball gown for the after party. And the award for the best quick change goes to…
Another actress to work watercolour florals was Natalie Dormer in Naeem Khan Spring 2015. An off the shoulder dress, the pastel print delicately faded away in to silver silk. We trust Lupita and Natalie’s style credentials implicitly, so excuse us while we dig out our old watercolour paints and start customising our clothes for spring/summer.
Model Camila Alves might technically have been at the SAG Awards to support husband Matthew McConaughey rather than having anything to do with the movie business herself, but we’d happily create a red carpet style category just for her. Just when we thought we’d seen this type of Donna Karan Atelier dress over and over again, along comes a plush royal purple colour to give it a dramatically up-to-date twist. (Aubergine is everywhere thanks to the recent 70s revival!) We commend Camila for keeping her hair and accessories sleek and simple – when a velvet fishtail creates a silhouette oozing va-va-voom like that you’ve got to let it do the talking! Keira Knightley and Elizabeth Rodriguez also followed suit in deep plum gowns.
Last night LA’s Shrine Auditorium was lit up by sparkling embellishments on sheer overlay gowns. Sarah Hyland and Emma Stone were amongst those who opted for an opulent overlay, but overall we have to give our prestigious Glittering Gossamer award to Emmy Rossum. The actress’ Armani Privé look had previously been seen on the Spring 2014 catwalk: embroidered with Swarovski crystals no less, it comprises a top and gold skirt overlaid with an ethereal grey crinoline lace. A Cartier diamond necklace and a loosely pulled back updo added to her enchanted fairytale charm.
