Malaga Deserves A Spot On Your Travel Bucket-List

Malaga deserves a spot on your travel bucket-list

Why you need to visit Malaga in 2015

As the initial excitement of a snow flurry turns in to the disappointing reality of muddy slush, the thought of Mediterranean sand stretching as far as the eye can see is more than enough to spark daydreams of travelling abroad. Throw in delicious cuisine and exotic people and we’re sold. But where are we wheeling our suitcase stuffed full of bikinis and cut offs to? Malaga – the city with something for everyone!

Located in southern Spain, Malaga absolutely deserves a spot on your travel bucket-list. If you’re not prepared to just take our word for it then let us talk you through why. There are museums and buildings peppered across the city that are essential stops for any art aficionado. It’s famously renowned for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, a fact that was celebrated in 2003 with the opening a museum dedicated to his legacy. It’s home to plentiful pieces, including some that might surprise you…the painter also drew sketches and created ceramics – who knew?!

Then there’s the food. Oh the food. Many Spanish cities are well worth visiting just for their cuisine, and Malaga is no exception. Remember our article about Quick Eating in New York City? Let us introduce you to blogger Pedro Ramirez. A Malaga native, his blog Spanish Abores highlights all the reasons his hometown is a foodie destination. Like other Spanish cities, it’s all about the tapas (that’s ‘small plates’ to you and me). Tapas are meant to be a bit of a conversation starter and are a source of great pride in Spain. In fact, each city boasts its own unique take on these bite-sized dishes.

A local favorite in Malaga is ‘espetos’ tapas: wooden skewers spearing a handful of sardines that are ‘cooked over a fire pit in a small boat filled with sand’. Well that definitely sounds like an Instagram worthy meal! Save room for the ‘papas a lo pobre con huevo’, a delicious plate comprising home-fried potatoes and eggs. Ramirez suggests making a meal of it by savouring it with a slice of freshly made bread!

If you’re a football fan – that’s soccer for all our American YCB-ers – and can’t bear the thought of being away from the beautiful game for too long, Malaga’s got you covered. The local club plays in La Rosaleda Stadium, which sits right in the middle of the city. You can watch the team participating in La Liga matches through the beginning of April. There’s no better way to experience a city’s culture than by attending a local match; that’s when everyone’s true colours show!

As noted here, Malaga is a pretty quick getaway (less than three hours!) for those residing in the UK. But the best part is that despite the short flight, it feels like you’re travelling miles away in to a far off oasis. Getting around the city is relatively straightforward too, especially if you decide to hire a car with the help of a site like StressFreeCarRental.com to help you compare and choose the best option for you that will be ready for you at the airport when you land. Once you get there, you’ll find that the temperatures are warm and the Mediterranean Sea is sparkling blue; taking a dip in the water is the perfect way to unwind after all that daytime sightseeing and eating. Yes, come the afternoon it’s definitely time for a siesta on the beach – just don’t forget your sunscreen!

So, we’re booking our flight now. Who’s with us?
