Tips and tricks for layering jewellery
Much like coffee, we believe a girl can never have too many pieces of jewellery. This festival season it’s all about stacking up mismatched rings, layering different length necklaces and loading up on bangles. Basically, it’s time to forget everything your mum ever told you about less being more.
Obsessed with treasures and trinkets that we can layer up, our current girl crush list looks a little like this: Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, Hana Rutledge. What do they all have in common? They all know how to accessorise to the max. A recent Fashion BA graduate, Hana Rutledge designs jewellery for the young, outgoing, unique boho girl who loves nothing more than styling up looks for music gigs and festivals. This is an ethos that’s reflected in her pieces through quartz crystals and Buddha inspired designs. Sharing our love of layering, the designer told us she’s purposely made small collections to help us layer matching jewellery …‘but the more confident buyer will hunt around for their unique projects to mismatch together too!’
One of the things we loved most about HANAS is that the necklaces are all available in varying lengths to allow for layering. We started with the Onyx Arrow Head necklace, then layered longer pieces such as the Marble Pendulum, the Spear necklaces and the Charm and Opal Arrowhead for a play on shapes and chain thickness. Another combo we love is the Black Druzy necklace with the Dipped Gold Amethyst, the gold on both pieces stands out beautifully against the stones! There are also a myriad of combinations of chokers to layer up in hundreds of colours and styles if you’re loving embracing the 90s comeback right now.
If bracelets are more your bag, we’re going crazy for layering up the Luna bangles for a more delicate look, or mixing the Vintage and Animal arm cuffs for a thematic twist. Given the sheer mass of wonderful, eclectic jewellery that’s going to be adorning your bronzed body this summer, Hana suggests keeping colour ways simple: ‘I’m obsessed with silvers and blues together!’ Likewise when it comes to the rest of your outfit, let the jewellery do the talking. ‘I much prefer different fabrics such as sheers and crochet in the same colour to not take away the focus from the jewellery’.
Lastly, everyone’s favourite: the finger party. (‘I never leave the house without at least 10 rings on. Just wish I had more fingers to wear more rings!’) We were instantly drawn to the Opal and Onyx Quartz rings to make a statement. When it comes to layering, there’s nothing quite like the Vintage rings or Amethyst Silver rings to command attention when stacked.
