Anne Hathaway reveals Hollywood thinks she’s too old (GASP!)
Aaliyah may have famously sang that “Age is nothing but a number” but in Hollywood age is everything.
In a new interview with Glamour UK, actress Anne Hathaway opened up about ageism in Hollywood, admitting that though she is only 32 she is already losing out on roles to younger starlets.
“I can’t complain about it because I benefitted from it,” she said. “When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them. And now I’m in my early thirties and I’m like, ‘Why did that 24 year old get that part?’ I was that 24 year old once, I can’t be upset about it, it’s the way things are.”
Wait, so, let me get this straight. In Hollywood, 32 is apparently over the hill. Whoa!
A similar ageism is taking hold in the workplace as companies advertise for “young-thinking” employees that are a “culture fit.” That’s code for “No one over 45 should apply.” Age discrimination is everywhere it seems but like Hathaway we shouldn’t panic as we blow out more birthday candles. Be comforted by your hard-earned skills and life experience.
“All I can do right now is think that thankfully you have built up perhaps a little bit of cachet and can tell stories that interest you and if people go to see them you’ll be allowed to make more.”
