10 big fashion trends to watch in 2016
It’s a new year which means all new fashion trends straight from the runways for you to capture and put your own spin on.
Here are 10 trends you will be seeing everywhere over the next 12 months:
The Could Shoulder
Nothing like a little glimpse of skin to heat up your winter. Last year it was all about the side cut out or the stomach but it has moved upward so you can literally give the cold shoulder (because you will be cold but look oh-so sleek!) Designers loving this look include Rachel Zoe, Derek Lam and Wes Gordon.
Tie-Dye
The 70’s are back, but this time they are actually super chic. Look for tie-dye from BCBG Max Azria, Raquel Allegra and Altuzarra. It will immediately make you want to hit the beach.
The Half-Moon Bag
Move over monogrammed YSL tassel bag! We are getting lunar this season. Victoria Beckham was all about it on her runways in September. Quirky totes in general are trendy this year. Look to Kate Spade, Moshino, Jeremy Scott, and Alice + Olivia for options.
Old English Sleeves
Hope you like sleeves because they are about to get really big. We saw them on the runways of Junya Watanabe, Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton, Christophe Lemaire, and Andrew Gn. In fact everything Victorian will be all the rage including ruffles, puffy sleeves, high-collar necklines, and flowers. Think Johnny Depp in the Pirates movies but with less gold teeth and dreads.
Flat Mules
Thank God the comfortable shoe trend is still on fleek. This year Trademark, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham are all creating signature flat mule lines and we could not be more excited. Check out this pair from Jenni Kayne or the playful loafers from Ops and Ops.
Robes
People have been rocking the fancy panama bottoms look for a while and now they get to add the robe. This is not some excuse to look sloppy though. Vogue’s Trace Barnhill makes it sound downright glamorous, “Wearing pajamas as clothes isn’t as much about invoking the whole I-woke-up-like-this ethos as much as it makes the wearer the Alice of her own Wonderland, constantly looking at the world around her in a new way, thinking all the time. Am I still dreaming?”
Slip Coverage
The 90’s look wearing lingerie in public is totally back! Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, and Celine are all behind it. Haider Ackermann and Saint-Laurent added a leather jacket to give the look more of an edge.
Pastels
Not the most groundbreaking idea (to quote the great Miranda Priestly) to bring out pastels in the spring but we’re into it, especially the pink. And it goes hand in hand with all the ruffles and bows you’ll be seeing.
Spanish Influence
Get ready to use those flamenco dancer emojis because Spanish influence will be all the rage in fashion this year. Proenza Schouler, Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors all included hints of Spanish culture in to their designs including lots of bold, red hues.
Put a Bow on It
The cast of Portlandia told us to ‘Put a bird on it’, and now the Gods of fashion want you to ‘Put a bow on it.’ Bows on the shoulders, on the collar, around the waist, across the best, etc., they are everywhere!
