How to build your career & help others along the way
It’s officially the rise of the #GIRLBOSS. We love seeing so many powerful women going out on their own to follow their passions, pursue their dreams and set up their own businesses. It seems there’s been a surge in those deciding that the 9-5 life isn’t for them, and we applaud that! It’s becoming an increasingly old-fashioned way of working, after all who says creativity happens strictly between 9 and 5? Let’s face it, it doesn’t! Some of us feel more inspired at 6am, some of us find that our creativity runs wild at 10pm, we’re all different and that’s one of the beautiful advantages of being your own boss.
So you’ve decided that corporate life isn’t for you, you want to do it for yourself. Have you ever considered a philanthropic business route? A philanthropic approach is becoming increasingly popular with both start-ups and global brands. And by philanthropy we simply mean giving back, and it can be in a variety of ways from doing well in the community, to supporting charities and actively volunteering. There are many benefits that come with philanthropy, so if it’s something you haven’t previously considered then listen up!
It’s great for reputation building, because why wouldn’t you want your brand to be known for charity work? It’s a good way to build a positive reputation and resonate with your potential customers. It will also help to support and build increased customer loyalty. If a customer is choosing between you and a competitor, if by choosing your brand they’ll also be helping a worthy cause – who will they pick?
It also makes your brand much more memorable, if someone reads about your brand and the wonderful causes or charity you support, they’re much more likely to remember you! Much of our decision making is based upon emotion, therefore a philanthropic approach can help you to make a connection on an emotional level with consumers through the causes in which you support.
You might be thinking at this point that this all sounds good, but does it really work and how can I implement this myself?
Just take a look at a few of these companies who are flying the flag for philanthropy.
Feed Projects is a great brand to look at, their whole business is based on a good cause, and they certainly take philanthropy to the next level. For every one of their bags purchased, Feed projects donate a selected amount of meals to charity, dependant on which style of handbag you opt for. So whilst buying your new tote bag or backpack, you’ll also be feeding up to hundreds of children in underprivileged countries. A simple idea that has turned into a hugely successful business model!
Similarly with Toms, a company that began by selling espadrilles on the premise that for every pair of sold, they’ll donate one pair to charity. The one for one campaign works so well because the message is clear, concise and memorable.
But it doesn’t just have to be purely fashion brands that take the lead on philanthropy! This is certainly not exclusive to the clothing sector. Just take UK Company Cooleraid, they recently reached a total of £5 million raised for their charity, the Lifeline Fund, aiding orphaned children in Malawi. It’s simply amazing what just one company can do for others, isn’t it?
Hopefully this can inspire our girl bosses of the future, to consider a philanthropic approach to business, and see just how beneficial it can really be!
