Shows on Netflix that will make you excited to go back to school
Going back to school is always exciting no matter what age you are—but it can also be stressful. By the second week you’ve worn all your new clothes, lost all the pens you bought, and are already worrying about all the work you have to do. But one place where it never seems stressful and everyone looks fabulous is on television. Alas, here are seven shows currently streaming on Netflix that will get you excited to go sharpen your pencils!
1. Gilmore Girls
You can never go wrong with Gilmore Girls. A very huge part of that series was both Rory and her mother Lorelai working extremely hard to get her the best education possible, which meant Friday night dinners with the dreaded grandparents. However, it paid off as Rory ended up top of her class at Chilton and went to Yale. Let’s not forget Lorelai also worked full-time and went to business school. And unlike many shows, Gilmore Girls also showed these women doing their homework and carrying more than one book at a time (betcha never saw that on Saved by the Bell).
2. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Think it’s been “too long” since you’ve been in a classroom? Well, try going back to high school in your 30s after living as a mole woman for 15 years. Actually, don’t try that, but do watch this show—as Kimmy Schmidt will show you what it is to truly want to be educated. And if you’re having a bad day, singing the theme song always helps.
3. Gossip Girl
OK, so the focus here wasn’t really on education, but if you need ideas for how to style a plaid skirt, then this is your show. Also, Gossip Girl has some great insights into office politics and the power of a queen bee.
4. The West Wing
Again, The West Wing isn’t exactly about school—but it is an education in politics, that’s for sure. Plus, you’ll spend so much time looking up every other word they are saying (it is so well-written) that it is practically like taking a political science class.
5. The Wonder Years
This show is all about the growing pains of being a teenager—plus it bonuses as an awesome history lesson for what life was like in the turbulent 1960s.
6. The Carrie Diaries
Ever look back at super-successful people and wonder what they were like in high school? Well, like most of us, they weren’t perfect and faced some major upheavals. Just like everyone’s favorite fictional New York City writer, Carrie Bradshaw.
7. Halt and Catch Fire
Cameron Howe is truly a genius coder, but when she is thrown into the uptight world of Silicon Prairie, however, she doesn’t exactly mesh with it. This is an amazing show for anyone interested in technology. And if you think it’s hard for women in tech today, wait until you see what it is was like in the 1980s.
