It seemed too good to be true when Legally Blonde 3 finally got the green light but now we have actual details straight from Ms. Reese Witherspoon AKA Elle Woods.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Witherspoon said, “Oh, it’s gonna be so fun! I got to go to a meeting the other day where we talked about all the new plot points and all the characters and some returning characters and some new characters. I mean, I got so excited just in the meeting. I was like, ‘This is gonna be good.’”
OK so the details are a bit vague but still! Progress!
The original film’s writers, Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, have also signed on for this one. Though the plot is definitely under wraps right now (and probably hasn’t been written yet) we know it will feature Woods being all lawerly and lots of millennial pink.
The character of Elle Woods has been an inspiration to so many for nearly 20 years. In an interview with Fast Company last month she said fans are still so obsessed by the character. From the interview:
“I went to law school because of you,” they’ll say, or, “You helped me believe in myself.” She gets teary talking about the film’s impact. “I didn’t even understand when I was making it that it was a bit of a modern feminist manifesto,” she says. “Seeing a woman who is interested in feminine attitudes—getting her nails done—but who is also interested in promoting herself and accomplishing things was a new idea of feminine. A lot of women related to that, and the feeling of being underestimated.”
The sequel will also be under Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine which gave us such massive hits as Wild, Gone Girl and the much lauded Big Little Lies. Somehow Reese has time for this in between all her projects, her book club and now her television series. Damn girl.
