It’s the countdown to Christmas and the annual rush for last-minute gifts is underway!
Lots of people will be buying from store liquidators to get the best deals or planning their shopping at quieter times, but whatever you do, don’t panic! Although time is ticking, there’s still some time to get organised. Check out these six tips for last-minute shoppers.
1. Stick to your Christmas budget
If you haven’t already, work out a realistic amount you can spend which won’t leave you short in January. With this in mind, you’ll be less likely to fall into the trap of impulse purchasing which can end up being costly. Try not to be tempted by last-minute deals – remember it’s not a bargain if you didn’t need it in the first place! It can be helpful to use credit to spread the cost in many cases, but make sure you can afford to repay the amount. Alternatively, you may visit a thrift shop to find affordable gifts for your family and friends.
2. Make a list and check it twice!
Before you start shopping, spend a short amount of time planning. Write a list of people you need to buy for, gift ideas and an amount you want to spend on each. If you’re hosting, make sure you’ve accounted for everything you need such as recipes, decorations and games on the day. Make sure you include everyone and everything you need to as it might be too late to forget something important!
3. Don’t get caught out by delivery times
If you’re buying online, make sure you double check delivery times and ensure you opt for guaranteed delivery before Christmas. Some deliveries can take more than a week during this busy period, so double check before clicking the checkout button! Many retailers offer a Click & Collect service if you’re not going to be at home.
4. Consider an experience voucher or gift card
It’s an instant and convenient alternative if you’re really stuck for gift ideas, and there are so many options to choose from. Homeware, fashion, experiences, restaurant vouchers, you name it! Make sure to check out the T&C’s before purchasing.
5. Keep your receipts
Whilst we usually have a good idea of what our family and friends love, you never know when you might need to return something. It could be a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit or a coffee machine that doesn’t work as expected. No matter the case, keeping your receipts is a good way to make sure you are covered in these situations. If you’re buying online, create a folder in your inbox to save your receipts so everything is easy to find.
6. Don’t let your guard down on festive fraud
Scams are just as rife at Christmas as any other time of the year. Don’t let your guard down when panic buying online. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Take Five to ensure you’re buying from a reputable seller or website, always check reviews and don’t click on any suspicious links.
