COUPLES Experience Loneliness More than their Single Friends

Couples in long-term relationships are more likely (47%) to experience loneliness in their life compared to their single friends (39%), reveals the latest study by Audley Group in light of National Loneliness Awareness this week.

Over three quarters of those in their 20s, and 65% of those in their 30s, have experienced loneliness in the last year, according to new research from retirement living provider, Audley Group. Across all age groups, half of UK adults have experienced feelings of loneliness.

Of those who have experienced loneliness, over (55%) of 20–29-year-olds will do anything to avoid it in the future, dipping slightly to 54% for those aged 30-39. Two fifths of over 55s agree, emphasizing the need for support across all age groups in the UK.

For many that have experienced loneliness, moving closer to family is part of the plan. A quarter of those in their 20s vow to move back closer to family. This rises slightly to 26% for those in their 30s. Looking at UK adults as a whole, 26% will ensure they keep busy many activities and social groups while 16% want to be a part of a strong community. Communities can play their part: a third of UK adults wish people would talk and connect more with them on a daily basis to reduce their current feelings.

Concerningly for a quarter of UK adults, loneliness is impacting their physical wellbeing and 44% say loneliness is just a part of their life they need to get used to.

Paul Morgan, Managing Director, Audley Group, said: “It’s a common misconception that only those who are older experience loneliness. It’s prevalent across all age groups, and it has never been more important to support family and friends, and the whole community. It’s also true that we can do a lot to control our circumstances and improve our own wellbeing.”

“That could mean moving closer to loved ones, or choosing the right housing for your needs with a strong community around you, giving you the support network you need.

“At Audley, we know how important it is to have a strong focus on wellbeing, and we know from our owners how much they value the facilities and community that integrated retirement living offers them. For many, the desire to be part of a strong community was a key driver in the decision to move and we’re really proud to provide this for our owners. In our 2021 property owners’ survey, 79% of owners said that Audley had ensured people living in the village hadn’t experienced any feelings of isolation in the pandemic. The greatest testament to the hard work of both owners and the team.”
