10 Dated Fashion Trends to Avoid in 2023

November 18, 2022

Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at the online destination for independent fashion brands SilkFred shares her expert opinion on which fashion items to ditch in 2022 and what to replace them with:

1. High-waisted skinny jeans

“Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen oversized silhouettes on the catwalk and on our favourite celebrities and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Not only does the catwalks dictate that your jeans need to be baggy, they also need to be low-rise.”

Swap for: mid-rise and low-rise wide-leg jeans

“The good thing about jeans is they are versatile and come in many styles. Choose either a mid-rise or low-rise waistline and a boyfriend or wide-leg fit to instantly bring your wardrobe into the current season.”

2. Biker boots

“Yes, we’ve been exclusively wearing biker boots the last few winter seasons and perhaps that’s why they seem to have fallen out of favour, and now feel very outdated.”

Swap for: cowboy boots

“Knee-length cowboy boots in either leather or suede are the go-to boot of the season. You need these western-style boots in your wardrobe. Pair with a mini skirts or an oversized midaxi dresse for an effortless look.”

3. Bomber jacket

“Bomber jackets might be your go-to for those half warm/half cold days, but it’s time to switch it up for a cooler, bolder and all together more grow-up look.”

Swap for: aviator jacket

“The aviator jacket trend is seriously taking off this season. The rules are: the bolder the better. Go for an oversized silhouette with a faux fur trim for a classic look that you can pair with anything.”

4. All gold jewellery looks

“We’ve always been told, you’re either a gold or silver person and you must stick to that choice rigorously. However, trends dictate it’s time to throw the jewellery rule-book out the window.”

Swap for: mixed metal looks

“Mix and match your silver and gold jewellery to create an edgy and fashion-forward look. This works nicely when stacking rings or layering different necklaces.”

5. V-neck neckline

“There seems to be a new neckline trend every season, but one you really need to put behind you is the v-neck.”

Swap for: cowl neck

“Opt for a fashion-forward cowl neck which is a really flattering fit, especially for cami tops and dresses.”

6. Faux fur coats

“Faux-fur coats may have been a must-have piece in every winter wardrobe, it is now very much at the bottom of the coat pile.”

Swap for: trench coats

“Take cues from the fashion elite and invest in a quality trench coat. You can also go for a faux leather style and cinched waist in order to create some shape to your outfit. If you’re looking for added drama, go bold with patent leather.”

7. Tailored blazers

“If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from SS23 catwalks, it’s that baggier is better. Ditch the structured look for something more trendy.”

Swap for: Waistcoats and oversized blazers

“Oversized blazers look great with minimalist outfits and are fantastic for layering. If you’re still looking for a more fitted look, invest in a stylish waistcoat which still gives you that structured, power dressing vibe.”

8. Strappy sandal high-heels

“When it comes to heels, nowadays the lower the better, and our feet aren’t complaining.”

Swap for: Mules and sculptured heels

“Mule heels have become the party season shoe of choice, and bonus points if you choose to rock a kitten heel or sculptured heel. A pair of mule heels will make you the most fashionable person in any room.”

9. Cropped boxy jumpers & hoodies

“We can all agree that cropped, boxy hoodies and jumpers have had their day, and let’s be honest, they have never been very practical, especially in winter.”

Swap for: Half zip jumpers

“Your new knitwear of choice should be the half-zip jumper, which is ultra comfortable and easy to throw on with your favourite pair of mom-fit jeans.”

10. Leather belts

“Whilst leather belts have been considered a classic for years, in the era of accessorising, they don’t often add that special touch that we’re looking for.”

Swap for: Chain belts

“The ever-popular grunge aesthetic will see the return of chain belts which will add some rock and roll inspired drama to your jeans and dresses.”

What to do with unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories:

“When clearing out your wardrobe there are better solutions than the bin. Take a little extra time to try and sell any items which are still in good condition to both benefit the environment and your pursestrings.”
