It’s been bad news for blazer-lovers on TikTok this past week, as a viral video shared on the app has claimed the wardrobe staple has reached ‘peak popularity’ and will soon be out of favour.
And although TikTok has a history of accurately predicting style trends, we’re not quite ready to part with our favourite staple just yet…
We spoke to SilkFred’s Head Stylist, Megan Watkins to get her opinion on the debate.
“Although TikTok can be a good indicator of what’s in and what’s out, the claim that blazers have fallen out of fashion seems a little far-fetched. Blazers should always be a staple piece in your wardrobe and whilst certain styles of blazers may be outdated, there are ways to wear them which are very much still on-trend. They can be worn on date nights, to the office, nights out and formal events and can elevate a simple dressed-down outfit into something sleek and tailored.”
“Although TikTok has claimed that blazers have reached ‘peak popularity’ and will soon fall out of favour, there are simple fixes to wear and style your fave blazer that keeps up with upcoming 2023 trends, seen as recently in the Fendi, Gucci and Prada shows at Milan’s AW23 fashion week.”
Megan reveals how to wear blazers in 2023:
“Take notes from fashion aficionado Dua Lipa, and wear your blazer with nothing underneath for a sexier, 90s feel. Or take a cue from street-style queen Hailey Bieber and go for an oversized silhouette in wool which is the in-fabric this season.
2023 is going to be all about taking staple pieces and elevating them, whether that’s through statement colours, exaggerated tailoring or unusual silhouettes – a black, regular fit blazer simply won’t cut it anymore. Take risks with your styling choices and go for a bold-coloured number, or mix and match textures or try out a style that plays with patterns and feminine silhouettes.”
