2024 is officially here, and discussions around emerging trends in the new year have already commenced, particularly in the kitchen design space. With this in mind, we spoke to Jen Nash, Head of Design at Magnet, who revealed the trends that are set to define kitchen interiors in the coming year.

The kitchen trends we can expect to see everywhere in 2024
Black is the kitchen colour of the year for 2024
In the last year, black kitchens have become the fastest-growing cabinet colour. In addition, demand for ‘black kitchens’ has skyrocketed, with the term receiving over 40,500 monthly Google Searches and #blackkitchen receiving over 138 million views on TikTok.
Jen says: “When choosing a kitchen colour, homeowners seek both functionality and modern, sleek style, and black perfectly embodies these qualities. A classic yet bold design statement, black kitchens offer enduring appeal and will stand the test of time in home design.
Additionally, the versatility of black allows for effortless pairing with various colours and materials, and its practicality shines through as it conceals dirt, stains, and scratches. Opting for black in the kitchen is not just a contemporary choice; it’s a wise and enduring investment in both form and function.”
White and Grey are kitchen colours of the past
While black kitchens are trending, white and grey are poised to become outdated in kitchen design for 2024. White kitchens have witnessed a substantial decrease in preference, with a notable 46% decline in sales, and grey kitchens sales have experienced an even more significant drop of over 56% compared to the previous year.
“The pervasive popularity of white and grey kitchens in recent years has made them less desirable kitchen colours. Although these colours are acknowledged for their timeless appeal, they can give off a clinical feel.
With homeowners in 2024 looking to be more daring with design and showcase their individuality through personalised design choices, white and grey fail to deliver the desired level of flair and personal expression homeowners are looking for.”
One-wall kitchens are trending
Recently, L-shaped, U-shaped, and galley-style kitchens have dominated the design landscape. However, as we move into 2024, homeowners are increasingly focused on optimising available space. In response to this, one-wall kitchens are experiencing a surge in popularity, with Google searches increasing by 170% in the last month alone.
Jen Nash says: “In recent times, there has been a misconception that links the practicality of a kitchen with its size – the common assumption is the larger, the better. However, homeowners are beginning to realise that practicality and functionality hinge more on how space is utilised rather than sheer size.
Homeowners are prioritising multi-functional use and are looking to transform the kitchen into a space not just for cooking but also for socialising and relaxation. This shift in mindset is reflected in the growing popularity of one-wall kitchens – a design choice that allows homeowners to optimise space by condensing the kitchen along a single wall. The one-wall layout is a space-saving and versatile solution that accommodates various functions within a more compact footprint.”
Sustainability will be at the forefront of designers’ minds in 2024
As we move into the new year, there will be a large focus on sustainability in the kitchen design space.
“In 2024, there will be a big emphasis on bringing the outdoors in as well as an increased focus on environmental responsibility.
The use of recycled and natural materials such as wood, stone and plant-based accents will become commonplace and will create a sustainable environment that echoes the serenity of the outdoors.
However, the green movement extends beyond aesthetics. Water-saving fixtures and innovative waste management solutions are set to become indispensable kitchen features that’ll transform the space into an eco-conscious sanctuary.”
