Makeup Expert Explains How to Sweat-Proof Your Makeup for Summer

With searches for ‘how to stop makeup sweating off’ up +67% and ‘best makeup for hot weather’ up +137%, as summer rolls in, sweat-proofing your makeup can be essential, especially if you’re prone to perspiration.

As the temperature rises, makeup expert and founder of Look Fabulous Forever, Tricia Cusden, provides her top tips on how you can sweat-proof your makeup effectively, whether you have mature skin or not.

Start with skincare

Before applying makeup, ensure your skin is well-prepped. Mature skin in particular is more porous than its younger counterparts, so it can be challenging for older women to keep their makeup looking fresh all day.

The secret to makeup looks with longevity is to create a ‘barrier’ between absorbent skin and makeup. Cleanse your face thoroughly and apply a lightweight moisturizer suitable for your skin type. For older skin, opt for hydrating formulas that won’t settle into fine lines.

Using a primer is crucial for sweat-proofing your makeup. Choose a mattifying primer to control oil and sweat production in your T-zone and other oily areas. For older skin, look for primers that use aloe vera and silica to fill open pores and fine lines these will provide a smooth canvas for makeup application.

Avoid cakey foundations

Select a long-wear or matte foundation formula that is transfer-resistant. Apply it with a damp makeup sponge or brush for a seamless finish. Avoid heavy, cakey formulas, especially on mature skin, as they can accentuate wrinkles and creases – foundations that contain vitamin E work to hydrate the skin, giving you a soft glow and a look of vitality.

Setting with a setting spray or powder

Finish off any liquid or cream base with a good sweep of pressed translucent powder. This will lock in foundation and concealer, prevent it from moving or sweating off, whilst remaining light and bright.

Prime those lips

Sweating can increase the likelihood of lipstick bleeding, especially for older women. Using a lip primer prevents feathering and bleeding of the colour into the lines around your mouth, keeping it in place all day and allowing you to create a clean, crisp lip line.

Avoid panda eyes

If it’s a very sweaty day, or if you plan to be cooling down in a pool be sure to use waterproof mascara to prevent any panda eyes. Mascara is also essential for defining and framing your eyes and adding dimension. Wiggle the brush along your upper lashes, applying as many coats as desired. For a more natural look avoid coating your bottom lashes. I’d always opt for a classic black mascara.

Touch-ups

Be sure to carry a pressed powder compact and blotting papers for touch-ups on the go. Sweep the powder over shiny areas and use blotting papers to absorb excess sweat without adding more product layers.

Hydration

Drinking more in the heat is obviously important, but it can also help your makeup stay put. Staying hydrated throughout the day to help regulate your body temperature and minimize excessive sweating, which can help improve the longevity of your makeup.
