These are the Jeans You Need in Your Wardrobe This Autumn

Jeans are an essential part of every modern wardrobe. From weekend brunching and nights out (who doesn’t love the ‘jeans and a nice top’ combo?) to days running errands or in the office (if your dress code allows), denim trousers are one of the most versatile items you can own.

Jeans trends can change in the blink of an eye, however. So what’s hot for autumn/winter? We asked Nick Drewe, founder of the online discount platform Wethrift, to run down the five jeans styles to be seen in this season…

Skinny Jeans

That’s right! The form-fitting jeans that have been out of vogue in recent years are making a comeback on the catwalks.

“Although Gen Z was the generation championing the downfall of millennials’ skinny jeans, it’s highly likely the cyclical pattern of trends rolling around will mean that they are becoming an increasingly popular denim style for this autumn,” Nick says.

“Female-focused fashion is already seeing the return of the skinny jeans look pre-fall, with Alexander McQueen debuting the return of the style in their AW24 fashion week catwalk. Additionally, celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kate Moss’s daughter Lila, have also been seen sporting the slim fit style in recent weeks, as we expect this style often as the weather gets colder.”

Straight-leg Jeans

A timeless classic, straight-leg jeans are incredibly versatile, taking you from summer to autumn with ease.

“Whether you prefer a classic blue wash or more of a distressed finish, straight-leg jeans offer a flattering fit for most body types, making them a must-have for autumn 2024,” Nick says. “With Google searches up by 73.4% in the past week, it’s evident we can expect to see straight-leg jeans a lot in the coming months.”

They’re ideal for teaming with other wardrobe staples and work with everything from trainers to boots or court heels.

Nick says: “Straight-leg jeans are super casual but can be dressed up to create an effortlessly chic look. Paired with a closed-toe heel and an oversized shirt, straight-leg jeans can be worn as an easy day-to-day look while looking put together.”

Leopard Print Jeans

While blue or black jeans will never go out of style, why not mix it up with a sassy animal print?

“2024 has been the year of leopard print, with the Y2K pattern making a major comeback,” Nick says. “Leopard print jeans are a way to inject fun and flair into everyday outfits. This eye-catching pattern adds a statement to your wardrobe, perfect for those who want to stand out and switch it up from the usual denim look.”

You can experiment with different colours too, he continues: “Whether in traditional earthy tones or more modern variations like muted greys or vibrant hues, leopard print jeans are a versatile option for any autumnal occasion. Pair them with neutral and plain tops or chunky knits to let the print take centre stage, or go all out and mix and match them with bold colours and various patterns.”

Barrel Jeans

What’s the most fashion-forward denim choice for autumn/winter? It’s got to be barrel jeans, also known as balloon jeans because of their rounded silhouette and loose fit.

“With Google Searches up by 6,900% in the past month, barrel jeans are the perfect style of denim that everyone is going to be wearing this autumn,” says Nick. “What makes barrel jeans a popular choice is how versatile they are. From the office to date night, you can dress them up and down for any occasion.”

Studded Jeans

Bringing a noughties vibe to autumn/winter 2024, studded jeans are proving popular with shoppers.

“Searches for studded jeans have increased massively in the past week, with a 400% increase,” Nick says. “Embellished with metal studs, pearls or diamantés along pockets, seams, or hems, these jeans offer a modern twist on classic styles of denim.”

In terms of styling, he advises: “To balance the edginess of the studs, layer a structured blazer over your outfit. This mix of sophisticated and edgy creates a chic, modern look that works for both casual outings and evening events.”

Cropped styles were popular in summer, but now it’s about ankle-length, he adds: “For a cosy autumn vibe, pair barrel jeans with a chunky jumper. Opt for a half-tuck to maintain some shape while embracing the oversized look.”
