As the seasons change and the weather cools, there is no better time to give our wardrobes a new lease of life and seek out the new A/W trends that are going to make us *actually* excited to get dressed on chilly mornings.
These days, TikTok has come into the forefront as the place to go for emerging fashion trends and general style inspiration, but with so many styles to sift through and choose from, keeping up with the latest ‘cores’ and aesthetics can start to feel like a real chore.
Luckily, we’ve spoken to Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at online fashion destination SilkFred who has shared the top 4 trends according to TikTok views and revealed how we can style them for the upcoming season.
1. Dark red
Last year we were all about ‘pops of red’, but now we’re getting deeper and darker with shades of cherry and burgundy. A perfect way to add some seasonal colour to boring winter outfits, it’s no surprise that red has been blowing up on TikTok, with an impressive 12.5 billion views.
“If you’re looking to make a fashion statement this season, then adding some deep red pieces into your wardrobe is key. Whether you want to use accessories to add a sultry festive tone to your outfit, or you’re ready to take the plunge in a head-to-toe burgundy number, you don’t want to miss out on rocking this versatile shade.” Megan recommends.
“Dark reds will make neutral colours like white pop, so consider opting for some stylish court shoes or patent leather handbag in this shade and pairing these accessories with a classic white shirt or cream suit trousers.”
“Statement A/W items like crew neck cardigans and leather jackets look great in deep reds. Pair these statement pieces with some casual, low-rise denim and gold jewellery.”
2. Ballet flats
Ballet flats have been having their moment for a while now, and while they may be seen as a quintessentially S/S shoe – TikTok has been schooling us on how to style them for Autumn, with over 158.3 million views.
Megan tells us: “For lots of us, ballet flats conjure up thoughts of 2000s style icons like Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller. The style is reminiscent of the Brit pop era, epitomised by an indie aesthetic – think skinny jeans, lots of neon and backcombed hair.”
“However, ballet flats are back and now they’re more refined, more adult and definitely less scuffed. For A/W 24 style casters are wearing their flats poking out casually from baggy jeans, paired with their fave Pilates leggings and a headband or dressed up with tights and a 90s slip dress and cropped cardigan for a fail safe A/W date night look.”
3. Suede jackets
You may have heard that it’s suede season. Seen in shades of tan and chocolate and sported by some of our fashion faves, such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Matilda Djerf, this noughties-inspired jacket is perfect for picking up pumpkin spice lattes and living out our Gilmore Girls fantasy.
“For A/W, you can’t go wrong with a crisp shirt and jeans situation – but you can elevate this look with a suede jacket.”
“Grey, butter yellow and burgundy are all huge colour trends for this season – so have a go at incorporating at least one of these hues into your suede jacket outfit.”
“As suede jackets are textural, they’re a great way to break up otherwise monotonous outfits and add a point of interest. You can also play with layers. Soft suede also goes well with other textured pieces, such as soft fluffy knits, leather and distressed denim.”
4. Cardigans
Move over jumpers, the cardigan is the only knitwear style to be seen in this season and TikTok certainly agrees, with over 301.6m views.
“The best thing about cardigans is that they are versatile and come in many different styles. If your personal style skews a little more girly, cardigan styles with bows and ruffled sleeves are super in this season or if you’re wanting to add some fashion edge to your outfits this A/W try a structured version, guaranteed to add a point of interest to any outfit.” Megan reveals.
“Cardigans are great for layering, so go for styles in neutral colours like dark grey, black and cream and silhouettes such as crew and v-necks, so they are versatile and you can get a good amount of wear out of them.”
