Name: Matt Carroll
Age: 32
Company/Position:
Sassoon Salon/ Kings Road Salon / Level 4 Colour Technician
How long have you been working in the industry?
Nearly six years
How did you first get into being a stylist/colourist?
I decided to have a break from working as a fashion designer and enrolled in a seven month diploma course at Sassoon. My career has grown from there.
What are your clients like on a typical day?
Working on the King’s Road, many would expect the majority of my clients to be rich ladies who lunch but in reality my clients are widely varied in age and lifestyle.
What are the hair trends for A/W?
The A/W collection that we are showcasing at Sassoon this season is called ‘Hair!’ The collection has a very bohemian feel with long flowing looks as well as shorter textured shapes and delicate multi-tonal colours to emphasise the movement in the cuts.
What tips can you give our readers on how to protect their hair this A/W?
Hair always needs a bit of extra attention in the A/W months so building a weekly treatment into your hair care regime can work wonders to make your hair more vibrant and manageable. Sassoon Professional Illuminating Restore (for coloured hair) or Sassoon Professional Intense Restore (for none coloured hair) will make you hair look and feel great through the cold winter months.
What type of hair trends can we expect to see on the runway in S/S13?
Shorter textured hair
As a hair stylist/colourist, what is your biggest hair fear?
Masses of long thick hair on a fully booked day!
The biggest lesson I’ve learnt in my career:
Never promise something that you can’t deliver!
The biggest achievement so far in my career:
This year I won the ‘Colourist of the Year’ Award at Sassoon’s Annual Internal Presentation – this made me proud!
My fave hair product:
Sassoon Professional Curl Form (I have curly hair!)
Curly or straight hair?
Due to my answer above I’m opting for curly!
Short or long hair?
Short
Where do you get your inspiration?
Fashion magazines, films and exhibitions
What is the worst thing you could do to your hair during the winter?
Over ironing/straightening hair mixed with cold weather and central heating is going to take a huge toll on your hair this winter. Try working more with its natural texture instead of forcing it to do things it doesn’t want to do.
What is your advice for aspiring hair stylists?
Listen to what your clients want, don’t be late and always be honest (but polite at the same time).
