Ever since January Jones debuted rose-gold highlights earlier this year during the Mad Men premiere events, there’s been non-stop beauty buzz about her new look.
It’s a more elegant and subtle take on the oh-so-trendy cotton candy hues. “It sounded fun,” she told InStyle. “We decided that they are rose gold highlights. Class it up a bit. I’m on hiatus so I can do what I want to it.”
Celebrity stylist Jennifer J. of Beverly Hills/Brentwood’s Juan Juan Salon was responsible for the transformation. Jennifer J. is definitely having a “moment,” also counting Kristen Stewart and Julia Roberts as clients.
I caught up with Jennifer to get the scoop on January’s highlights:
What was the inspiration behind rose gold highlights?
J: I had seen the trend of rose gold highlights on the runway for spring and I thought it would be amazing for her. I suggested it to her and she loved it so custom blended the color and we both agreed on it when it looked perfect.
How did you achieve these highlights?
J: If you do punky color which lasts a lot longer, you have to bleach the hair first so the color will show up and it will last a lot longer. I mixed a punky color with a Wella Professional permanent color concentrated mixer so it would last longer and got the perfect rose gold shade.
What’s the secret to keeping bright colored highlights classy?
J: Bright colors can often look trashy so it’s important that the rest of the hair is polished looking and then the bright color is just a little punch of color for fun.
Can this be done easily at home for girls who just want to sport it for a night?
J: This can be done at home with color rub or punky color. I have color rub for sale on my website,www.jenniferjbeauty.com, it washes out after a few shampoos so it’s non committal.
Jennifer J. also offers a large library of how-to videos, tutorials, and tips on everything, from botched at-home dyes to the correct way of using dry shampoo. She’s also really friendly and always open for online consultations! Feel free to ask her anything on her Ask Jennifer J page or catch her on Twitter@JenniferJBeauty.
