Spring is here and we are cleaning our homes, revamping our wardrobes and as the season changes so does our skincare needs so we asked the award-winning skincare educator –Cigdem Kemal Yilmaz, Chemical Engineer and Founder of Skin Masterclass her top three tips on how to spring clean your skin-drobe…
Skincare Swaps
“As the sun begins to appear you may want to use lighter less occlusive textures. Often in Winter with indoor heating and colder weather often we need to ramp up the level of hydration with thicker textures and creams to reduce trans-epidermal water loss. In hot weather these thicker textures may feel uncomfortable and greasy. Thick comforting balm cleansers can be replaced for lighter gel cleansers and thicker creams can be replaced with lighter textured emollient-based lotion. For those with oiler skin might want to skip the cream all together and opt for a hydrating serum instead and then layer with their sunscreen on top.”
Boost Your Antioxidants
“Antioxidants can be great all year round but are particularly good in Spring and Summer to help brighten up your complexion. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, green tea extract, ferulic acid and resveratrol, boosts your sunscreen adding another layer of protection against sun induced pigmentation.
When the skin is exposed to UV rays from the sun, free radicals are generated which can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, antioxidants can stabilize the free radicals.”
SPF, SPF & SPF
“SPF is not just for Spring/Summer and is for all year round, but if it isn’t something you are using, now is the time to implement it. Sunscreen protects from sun damage which can lead to hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and fine lines. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (which protects against UVB rays that cause burning and UVA rays that cause lasting damage) with an SPF of 30 or more. Sunscreen’s have advanced over the years with formulations for oilier skin types, acne-prone skin, and sensitive skins. Don’t forget to extend your spring clean to your SPF too getting rid of expired sunscreen.”
