Ariana Returns to Her Signature High Ponytail: The Secrets to a Voluminous Ponytail
Popstar and hair icon Ariana Grande recently wowed fans by returning to her signature slicked-back high ponytail at a Wicked screening earlier this week.
Ariana’s slick ponytail is not only the perfect effortlessly polished style for both big events and daily wear, but it’s also a great practical look for extending the time between hair washes.
A key characteristic of Ariana’s ponytail is that the hair falls to one layer in a blunt cut. This bluntness gives more weight to her ponytail, making the hair look thicker and more voluminous.
If you’re not blessed with naturally thick hair or need to mask layers, a clip-in ponytail hair extension is your best friend.

This look works on all kinds of hair lengths, from lobs to waist-length tresses. Pick a ponytail extension that best matches your natural length and colour, or you can pick a longer piece for a temporary change.
To achieve the look, I’d recommend starting with hair that’s a few days old, so it has some natural texture and grittiness to hold the look in place all day.
Blowing out your hair beforehand can also help achieve extra volume through your ends and mimic Ariana’s subtle bouncy flicks. Make sure to apply plenty of heat protectant beforehand.
First, apply a strong hold hairspray across the top of your head, creating an even layer, and using a hairbrush smooth your hair into a high ponytail and secure in place with strong and stretchy hair tie.
Take a piece of hair and wind it around the hair tie and comb to conceal both, pinning the end of the section underneath the hair tie with a bobby pin to polish off the look.
Finally, make sure to tame any stubborn flyaways. An easy hack is to take a clean toothbrush and spray the bristles in hairspray. Alternatively, a wax stick is great for smoothing down any stray hairs. It’s also perfect for slicking down fringes and keeping your ponytail updo looking sleek.
