Smart Young Women Never Crumble

April 12, 2012

This article is not for the faint of heart. This is the real deal whether you like it or not. This is what is played out in the real world. Serendipity has everything to do with where you are. It could be much easier in the UK and tougher in the UAE. Job hunting encompasses a wide-range of possibilities and the more you know about how the game is played the easier your transition into a rewarding career will be as well as your rise to the top.

This could be you in a few years… terrific!

Here is food for thought. If you are all that and then some, why would it necessitate being a bitch in order to get ahead and not crumble? Advancing one’s career requires being in control of a number of factors. No, your priorities should not be skewed toward credentials. Credentials are your trump card to play when you are older, not at the beginning. What works initially is being cute, sassy, standoffish, and a teeny tiny bit of a bitch. Don’t forget you don’t have ‘diddly squat’ to offer out the gate. You must genuinely know how to package you in order to land that blissful 1st job.  Now let’s spin this web.

It is imperative for you to know that there is a place for you. There are countless employers clawing to get you to join their firm. The riddle is which ones? Hmmmmm.

Of key importance – knowing who you are aesthetically and internally. What’s your temperament? Are you dowdy, reserved, frumpy, lumpy, and hefty with fat and shiny pink cheeks on pale white skin? Are you the go-getter, hustler, all out there, and driven to get what you want no matter what…looking as Reese Witherspoon, and following the example of an aging Madonna? Determine who you are as a package. That’s more than 50% of your success. The balance is how you maneuver through the maze, get that interview, and land that dream career opportunity.

Prepare your checklist. Yes, you need a checklist. Every successful catch is, in part, based on your hook. Your developed skill is secondary. Picture yourself going shopping. The best dress or suit for you is the one that conforms nicely to your figure. The other end of your hook is how you deport you in the dress or suit. Are you wearing it like ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ or as the sleek, elegant, and exquisite Angelina Jolie? How you are carriage in the dress or suit will tell your prospective employer who you are as a person. Yes, the little unspoken nuances speak volumes about you before, during, and after the interview.

The second part is the interview itself. Depending on the gender of your interviewer, play to her or him precisely according to the energy they emanate. If it is a man, be grateful as you can play to his weaknesses. Remember most men are exhaustively visual with short attention spans. Your winning strategy here is to keep the interview light, flowing, and agile. Remember this will be your first gig and, therefore, the interviewer will be more likely to consider you since he knows nothing about you. You have no history or baggage. If you are able to interview well and allow him or her to see that you are more than a ‘stunner’, then you are likely to close the deal on the spot. How you sit in the chair, is a factor. Is that knockout dress or skirt hiked-up too high with your ‘knickers’ exposed?  Proper wear of a dress, skirt, or suit, is a factor. You do want to be a tad bit of a tart (Dolly Parton), but please don’t overdo a good thing. How you focus or glare into the interviewer’s eyes, is a factor. How you constantly cross your legs and uncross them and “oh go ahead” cross them again, is a factor.

NO, this is NOT the way your Interview must go!

Your verbal delivery, is a factor. As long as you clear all the hurdles before going into the interview, things will all work out in your favor. Do as much research as possible prior to the interview including finding out with whom you will be interviewing. Do whatever you can to source that person’s information online: LinkedIn, Google, FB, Digg, Twitter, and StumbleUpon. Do your ‘due diligence’ and the cards will be stacked in your favor to win. Remember, preparation is paramount! http://www.linkedin.com/

Digital and social media are priceless. Yes, they are! When used effectively, they can lead you directly to the decision makers who are hiring without having to pass through HR. Moreover, they are a tool through which you can showcase and promote yourself head and shoulder above the other competing candidates approaching the doorway. You instead have cleverly found the path less travelled directly to the hiring manager, and, therefore, will make an unconventional, lasting, and positive impression. HAPPY JOB HUNTING!
