Looking for a Pay Rise? Then Wear This One Colour to Work New Study Reveals

Wear light blue to an interview, gold on a first date and orange to negotiate a pay rise… Study reveals that the colour you wear today could be life-changing

A study suggests the average Brit’s wardrobe is 54 percent BLACK – yet according to the data, many Brits truly believe that wearing a specific colour has influenced an important outcome in their life. In fact, more than a quarter (27 percent) of the 2,000 Britons surveyed by Lakeside Shopping Centre, said they had landed their dream job, after wearing LIGHT BLUE to the interview.

The same number (25 percent) of people looking for their life partner, claimed the colour they wore on their first date with their forever spouse, was GOLD.

Meeting a new best friend is more likely to happen if you wear silver, than any other colour (17 percent), according to the data. While more than one in ten (14 percent) insist that they nailed a presentation at work because they were wearing yellow.

Negotiating pay rises, hoping for a proposal and searching for a dream home have also been influenced by wearing a certain colour.

Overall, 80 percent of Brits go a step further and believe that colours show what type of person you really are, influencing everything from job interviews to romantic relationships.

Fashion Psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell in collaboration with Lakeside Shopping Centre, explored the impact of colour on daily life. She explains: “Colour psychology plays a huge role in how we are perceived by others and how we feel about ourselves. The practice teaches us that the mind/body relationship is incredibly dynamic when it comes to colour.

“Long wavelength colours like red, orange, gold or yellow activate our sympathetic system, making us feel more sociable, extraverted and energetic. In contrast, short-wavelength colours like blue, indigo and violet activate the parasympathetic system, making us feel relaxed, pensive and mediative.

Our wardrobe choices, therefore, empower us to approach opportunities and relationships, with a different mindset, so it’s worth considering the power of colour when making key life decisions.”

It’s no surprise that 39 percent agree that different colours help create a strong first impression, with seven in ten (71 percent) thinking it vital to make a positive lasting effect. But you need to be quick as the nation makes its decision in just 29 seconds. And according to the data, people who wear black are seen as introverted (21 percent), productive (15 percent), high earners (13 percent) and boring (13 percent), while those of us who prefer a bolder colour such as blue are reliable (29 percent), loyal (29 percent) and a safe pair of hands (18 percent).

If you prefer to wear white, you’re seen as clean and tidy (53 percent), sensitive (24 percent) and organised (20 percent), yellow suggests you are extroverted (36 percent) and artistic (30 percent).

Susan Williamson, Head of Marketing for Lakeside Shopping Centre, which commissioned the study said: “The research shows the effect that different colours can make – not only on our own confidence but in the way people see us. Fashion is more than just clothes, it’s a way to express yourself and shape first impressions.

As a premier shopping destination, we are dedicated to helping our visitors look and feel their best, whether they need expert styling advice or access to the latest trends.”

Six in ten (60 percent) of the 2,000 Brits surveyed say they have a lucky colour, with light blue (24 percent), red (22 percent), purple (16 percent), green (16 percent) and navy (15 percent) topping the list.
