Pick of the crop (tops) at MTV Awards
It was the night that saw internet sensation Grumpy Cat wearing a Pharrell-inspired hat, so if even moggy megastars were upping their fashion game at the 2014 MTV Awards, we should expect no less from their human counterparts.
Overall there were, we’re saddened to say, a number of truly shocking and bizarre outfits – it’s a strange day when Jersey Shore’s Snooki is more likely to end up on a best dressed rather than worst dressed list. However, there was light at the end of the red velvet carpeted tunnel in the shape of Debbie Ryan, Jessica Alba, Rocsi Diaz and Nicki Minaj.
Debby Ryan looked every inch the Disney darling in a Grecian goddess style Rachel Zoe jumpsuit. We can forgive Debby the potential fashion faux pas of wearing all black to a spring event given she clearly knows how to dress her figure: the one-shoulder and midriff cut-out flashed a cheeky bit of youthful flesh, whilst the cinched in waist made the look refined beyond her 20 years. She kept her accessories simple with a rose-gold bangle and rings which complemented her beautifully coiffured strawberry blonde locks. The full length nature of the outfit meant her shoes were unfortunately hidden from view, but we can only assume they were absolutely fabulous.
The midriff-bearing contest continued as a crop top and high waisted skirt proved the most popular ensemble of the night, with Shailene Woodley, Pia Mia Perez and Karina Smirnoff all attempting the look with varying degrees of success. The MTV Awards are known for having a slightly more relaxed attitude to fashion than most other awards ceremonies, and Rocsi Diaz got the laid back but glamorous vibe just right in a dazzling white skirt and crop top combo with cut out detailing. She made sure to bring a touch of old-school Hollywood elegance to the night as she swept her curled hair over to one side.
Jessica Alba played with proportions as she teamed a voluminous sunny lime Kenzo skirt with a neat white bandeau, creating a wonderfully flirty look. The potentially questionable choice of an oversized black clutch made sense when put together with monochrome geometric print shoes, which tied the seemingly disparate elements of the outfit together.
Finally, we must discuss Nicki Minaj who, in the fashion stakes, won the award for the most dramatic makeover. The singer, usually known for her garish style, stepped out in a slinky black body con dress and tribal-inspired gold jewellery, and in doing so proved that actually simplicity and some carefully chosen statement accessories can win the day.
