With a burgeoning fashion label, designer Rebecca Minkoff does it all.
From her signature handbags to her effortless separates and wedges, not to mention her newly launched jewelry line, Rebecca Minkoff is proving herself as one of fashion industry’s leading luxury brands.
Minkoff first began toying with design in the costume department of her performing arts high school where she learned to make patterns and began constructing and draping garments. After high school Minkoff decided to forgo college and, instead, follow her fashion design dreams to New York City at the youthful age of 18.
In 2001 Minkoff became an “overnight sensation” following her design of the “I Love New York” t-shirt as part of a five-piece capsule collection. Minkoff’s design career continued to grow and, in 2005, evolved into the creation of her first handbag, now known as the iconic “Morning After Bag”.
Following her success in handbags Rebecca Minkoff continued to cultivate her “downtown romantic” themed designs and by 2009 she was ready to present her first ready-to-wear collection.
Her most recent spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection was full of “Boot-cut jeans with floral bottoms, faded motorcycle vests, sunset-print bomber jackets, and a grandma-chic tweed shorts suit.” Rebecca Minkoff filled her SS13 collection full with frocks clad in colorful flowers and stripes alongside bold bandanna-inspired looks, which were one of the highlights of her collection. When asked about the women who inspired the collection, Minkoff claimed “She’s a sexy tomboy with a bit of bonvivant,” backstage before her SS13 show.
Minkoff is one busy woman, not only did she show her SS13 ready-to-wear collection during NYFW and launch her highly-anticipated jewelry line this Fall season but she is also preparing to join Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton on Soho’s Greene Street in NYC to open her first US flagship store which will join her already-opened official flagship store in Japan.
To kickstart her jewelry collection, in which she “wanted to create pieces using traditionally feminine or glitzy materials, like pavé crystals, and design them in a way that was less ladylike and more daring”, she looked to inspiring women in fashion such as Jane Birkin and Katharine Hepburn and what they would wear today.
To remain true to her “new downtown girl” aesthetic she created pieces with edgier elements that still contained a hint of glamour. The collection features a “generous use of horns and warrior-esque shapes” and is full of mixed metals, like rose gold and gold, along with retro-inspired, geometric shapes and colors.
With her brand distributed in over 900 stores worldwide, Rebecca Minkoff has “developed into a global lifestyle brand with a wide range of accessories, footwear, apparel, handbags and jewelry” which can be spotted around the world on young women and starlets alike.
