Trend Spotting At The Golden Globes

January 16, 2013

At the Golden Globes afterparty, celebrities showcased some of the biggest fashion trends in one of the most interesting fashion displays to date!

After the lush Golden Globes ceremony last week, there came the Golden Globes afterparty. Both events gave us a chance to see a huge range of
fabulous outfits, sported by our favourite celebrities. This year, we spotted quite a few common trends between the hundreds of different styles – including fishtail dresses, oxblood vamp, girly ruffles, sheer materials teamed up with embroidery or embellishment, and dresses with trains. Not to forget, around 90% of the gorgeous ladies turned up on the red carpet dressed in floor-length numbers for the ultimate statement of glamour. What made the biggest impression on us were the ruffle trend and the sheer embellishment theme.

We ogled at ex-One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush who wore a crisp white chiffon Lisa Ho dress, complete with mesh, ruffled sleeves. However, it was Odette Annable who we couldn’t keep our eyes off.  Not only did she look picture perfect in a Rachel Roy gown, but this House beauty also dressed very daringly with a bold and unusual colour scheme. Hats off to you Ms Annable, you pulled of this asymmetrical look absolutely.  Odette’s dress was bright purple and one shouldered, with a large ruffle just below the waist, that was edged in a bright-yellow hue.  The dress, which featured a flattering front-split, was teamed with matching yellow pointed heels, and an acid-green clutch.

Another trend that we simply couldn’t get enough of was the sheer, embellished, embroidered look.  Many stars opted for this style, including Kerry Washington, Catherine Zeta Jones and Malin Ackerman (whose blue, Alberta Ferretti number thinks deserves a special mention).  We think that Isla Fisher, Jennifer Lopez, Thandie Newton and Bérénice Marlohe should be at the top of this lengthy list, with four unique dresses. Jennifer Lopez came through in a nude, long-sleeved Zuhair Murad gown, embroidered with ivory lace and beads, whilst Isla Fisher opted for a similar colour scheme in a nude, short-sleeved Reem Accra gown, with a plunging neckline, embellished with silver jewels.

Bérénice Marlohe looked every bit the Bond girl at the afterparty, stunning the crowds in her Moniqe Lhuillier navy embroidered tulle gown, complete with a sultry split up the leg.  Whilst we loved her dress the more than most of the others in the trend, she was awarded a joint-first in the fashionista stakes, at a tie with Thandie Newton. British actress Newton ignored the conventions that most others opted for at the awards, and she did so by leaving the gown at home in favour of a mini-dress.  She was a breath of fresh air in a Giles, high-necked tulle cocktail dress, which was a sparkly inspiration with all-over Swarovski-crystal embellishments.

We think that that sheer embroidery and embellishment will become a big fashion topic of 2013.  What was your favourite piece or trend?  What will we see at the revered Academy Awards next month?
