Couture in a simpler sense, to simpler people means ridiculously well made clothes sold at ridiculously high prices. To others such as myself and other fashion enthusiasts it means more than that; a work of art, something you only see in magazine editorials or on the red carpet…
During a certain time of the year, certain fashion houses in Paris and London work together to create dresses, or shall I say magical pieces of art any fashionista would dream of wearing. However, we cannot expect all couture to be as fine and functional as Elie Saab’s intricately made pieces recently spotted on the catwalk.
While I agree with the general belief that couture is relatively elitist, some designers give it a more fun approach. As we could see in Ulyana Sergeenko’s show, the generally opulent and extravagant realm of couture is juxtaposed with a mere fairytale, out of a storybook approach. Being spring, consequently, flowers, brights and bold patterns are in order, so while I won’t say her collection was unique or unusual, I will say that it was definitely refreshing.
Karl Lagerfeld most definitely turned heads during his haute couture show at Paris Fashion Week, and his fine collection wasn’t the only reason this time. Showing support for the French President’s same sex marriage, Karl Lagerfeld was raising awareness on a huge platform with two brides taking the stage, walking hand in hand dressed from head-to-toe in Chanel Haute Couture.
