Trend Alert: Top Festival Fashion Trends

Coachella has officially kicked off this year’s festival season, with stylish stars from Alexa Chung and Kate Bosworth to the who’s who of the fashion blogs flocking to the Indio polo fields to party with the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Stone Roses and Phoenix.

Whether you’re heading to next weekend’s gig, or Glasto, or Tomorrowland, or Calvi on the Rocks, or any of the other summer festivals, there’s one thing that’s sure to be on your mind: what to wear. Here’s our definitive guide on what’s in (and out) on this year’s fashion circuit.

IN: Overalls

OUT: Playsuits

Blame Alexa Chung for this one – dungarees and their summer cousin, the shorteralls are back with a vengeance this year. Skip the playsuit and instead layer up your overalls with a vintage tee and a wide-brimmed hat, or pop on a cute collared shirt for those cooler desert nights.

IN: Crop tops

OUT: Cut-out tees

Last year, every t-shirt had a grungy spin: think oversized arm holes, baggy boyfriend tees tied up and slashed necklines. This time, we’ve gone a little more feminine, but by no means less flashy. Crop tops and bandeau bras are everywhere at the moment, but the key to this trend is all about contrast – team these teeny-tiny tops with structured bottoms: think A-line skirts, tailored shorts or a demure knee-length skirt to reveal just the right amount of skin.

IN: Little white dress

OUT: Bright colours

We know you’re at a festival and there’s a slim-to-none chance that your dress will still be the same colour at the end of the day, but there’s no denying the lure of the LWD. Cool, light and with an effortless bohemian vibe, it’s an easy throw-on for those sun-drenched days. Tie a loose chambray shirt around your waist and you’re good to go.

IN: Printed shorts

OUT: Denim cut-offs

Following on from winter’s printed pant trend, it’s all about bright, patterned shorts this season. So skip the bleached denim this year and go crazy with the colours. Bonus points if you match it with a clashing top.

IN: Reflective sunnies

OUT: Wayfarers

The Wayfarer has had more than its fair share of the style spotlight in the last couple of years, so we’re very glad that there’s a new shade on the horizon: the oh-so-cool mirrored sunnies. Perfect for hiding your eyes and protecting from UV rays, they also double as a mirror when you’re stuck in the desert, trying to reapply your lippy (c’mon, we all know it happens).
