In the know: New York Fashion Week
Today is September 5, which for the fashion crew means the start of a sleep-deprived week and an even faster pace than usual. It is the first day of New York Fashion Week showcasing the Spring 2014 Collections. There are other ways to follow the shows no matter where you are located, such as watching all of the shows live on the Mercedes Benz Livestream.
We are excited for up-and-coming fashion designer Maki Osakwe to make her New York Fashion Week debut. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Maki’s clothing line, Maki OH, reflects traditional Nigerian patterns and silhouettes.
For those of you who will be working at or attending one of the shows, we got the scoop from a New York Fashion Week veteran on how to survive. Ruthie Friedlander, Digital Strategist for The Row and Founder of Styleite, gave us three tips on how to survive the endurance test that is Fashion Week.
What to bring?
Eat! Carry granola bars and Vitamin Water.
What to wear?
Unless you are one of the runway models or a celebrity in the front row, just wear flats!
How to stay in the know:
I love checking the Instagram feed. People in the industry are so great at sharing their experiences and it’s really helpful for those of us that get FOMO from not being everywhere at once.
Here are our top suggestions of industry folks to follow on Instagram:
– Jane Keltner de Valle, @janekeltnerdev: From the Senior Fashion News Director at Teen Vogue (and soon-to-be mom) we anticipate top notch front row coverage and party pics.
– Leandra Medine (AKA The Man Repeller), @ManRepeller: We know that Leandra will be cranking out selfies of her fashion-forward style all week long.
– Eva Chen, @evachen212: We can’t wait to see Fashion Week footage from the much-buzzed-about new Editor-in-Chief of Lucky Magazine.
– The Cut, @cutblog: New York Magazine’s fashion blog, The Cut, will be up front and center covering street style, runway looks, and celebrity attendees.
– Taylor Tomasi Hill, @ttomasihill: Formerly the Style and Accessories Director at Marie Claire, the street style darling and artistic director at Moda Operandi is always dressed to impress and present at the hippest parties.
Happy New York Fashion Week everyone!
