NYFW: SS14 trend round up
Unless you’ve been living in an Instagram hole, you’ll have seen all the best backstage and runway looks from New York Fashion Week. Kicking off a month of worldwide fashion, this year’s New York Fashion Week featured designers such as DKNY, Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Victoria Beckham; models like Karlie Kloss, Coco Rocha, Lindsay Wixon, Jourdan Dunn and Behati Prinsloo; and front-row favorites from Kanye (minus Kim) to Courtney Love.
Fashionistas aside, it’s really all about the S/S14 trends. So what are the ones to watch?
Fine Lines
After seasons of chunky, androgynous dressing, we’re heading back to the ‘90s… in a good way. Spaghetti strap camisoles, dainty halter necks and simple, slim-fitting sheaths were seen at Jason Wu, DVF, Altuzzura and Rag & Bone. We’ll be seeing a lot of these fine lines popping up on next season’s eveningwear – the perfect cut for summer parties and dressed-down weddings.
Total White Out
The all-white look is still going strong next season according to 3.1 Phillip Lim, Derek Lam and Prabal Gurung. The spring/summer update is minimalism to the max, with Helmut Lang nailing the look (as usual). Clever tailoring, clean silhouettes and feminine accents make this a look that’s perfect for the office.
Crop Tops
This summer’s tiny top is cropping (excuse the pun) back up again next season. BCBG and Rag & Bone nailed two trends at once – BCBG featured shrunken white blouses, while Rag & Bone was totally 90s in leather crop tops and spaghetti straps. We’ll be wearing it layered underneath an oversized jacket by day, and then stripping off as soon as the sun goes down.
Gym Box
If Alexander Wang is anything to go by (and we all know he is), then sporty, boxy jackets are the new blazer. 3.1 Phillip Lim teamed a stiff kimono jacket with wide-leg trousers, Proezna Schouler worked boxy jackets with beautiful caramel suede panels, styled with long line culottes.
Back to Birkenstocks
Yes, you read right. The footwear one step ahead of the others was the humble, hippie Birkenstock. Shades of Grey, Edun, Trina Turk and Houghton all featured the sandal that’s so ugly, it’s cool in their Spring shows. While the double-strap version is kinda okay, the classic thong style is best left to boho queens Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
