Trending: the formal sweatshirt
It all began with an unlikely hit; worn insouciantly with a sheer polka dot skirt, Riccardo Tisci’s mash up Bambi print sweatshirt became the must-have item of AW13 and it has been the forerunner for a renaissance of leisurewear inspired clothing. Whilst the theme of sportswear has been ubiquitous for the past few seasons, there has been a shift from the overtly casual to what could be stipulated as more formal sportswear. This season presented some of the strongest interpretations of this look; bomber jackets in chiffons, joggers in draped silk, tightly cuffed at the ankle and most strikingly, sweatshirts have been redefined, rendered in silks, decorated with jewels and made worthy of centre stage in our wardrobes.
Sportswear has always been a key influence on the New York runways. DKNY played with textures, panneling and prints; we loved the pink giraffe print version, seamlessly paired with a coordinating skirt and pointy shoes whilst Jason Wu presented a slouchy grey marl sweat, embellished with distressed chiffon to add depth and texture. Gucci went head to toe sports-luxe with a black chiffon bomber paired with semi sheer pants. Here at Your Coffee Break, we can’t wait to rock this look whilst having an after work cocktail – who knew gym-teacher chic would be so on trend?
At Loewe a navy leather skirt was paired with wide sleeved, bejeweled sweatshirt – the perfect look for a nonchalant office to evening outfit. Our favorite styles though, came from Christopher Kane. Off the shoulder and encrusted in jewels or close fitting in macaroon shades with beaded motifs and paired with flowy midi skirts, Kane presented the perfect look for the British springtime and a lesson in how to wear this look. A silk variety paired with a pencil skirt, mid length if you’re going for a 90’s inspired look, forms a perfect work ensemble. For a look that is both perfectly undone and ineffably chic, don a beaded sweat with slim trousers with a glossy patent heel and a red lip. Here at Your Coffee Break we are confident the humble sweatshirt is set to become an indispensible wardrobe staple.
