The Bigger The Better: The Oversized Coat
The bigger the better: the oversized coat
Winter has snuck up on us this year; it’s gone from a mild nip in the air to a biting chill in a matter of a few days. It can no longer be denied, as chic as our skinny leather jacket looks thrown over our midi skirts, it shan’t keep us snug and it is unquestionably time to pull out the winter coats. If we’re entirely honest, we here at Your Coffee Break have been secretly dreaming of the season new coats since we laid eyes on the AW13/14 shows back in February but the overcast skies certainly lend credence to our boundless search for that perfect winter coat.
Oversized is the operative word for coats this autumn. Carven was our favourite purveyor of the sizeable silhouette, bringing us beautiful sloped shoulders with giant collars and lapels, cocoon sleeves and ample pockets in which to hide frostbitten fingers, in sugared almond shades of pink & blue. At the other end of the spectrum was Stella McCartney, with blown up mannish, overcoats with broad shoulders and sleeves inching down the knuckles.
It is no small feat to achieve a coat that is both stylish yet warm, but this trend ticks all the boxes. The look works perfectly paired with slim, streamlined trouser or a dress and thigh high boots. The most fabulous feature of this trend is acres of room for your chunkiest of knits, keeping us fashionistas both chic and toasty. And for those of us whom can only dream of being enveloped in Céline’s navy cocoon coat, the high street has come up trumps with a wealth of beautiful, well-cut interpretations of the trend. Zara has some great offerings such as this gorgeous woolen wrap around and Jaeger has the androgynous look nailed with their oversized herringbone style. For a pop of color to brighten you’re wintery days opt for the vibrant variety, this coral number from Reiss and the blue coat from Topshop are guaranteed to perk up even the dreariest of days. Asos’s vintage style cocoon coat is however our favourite rendering of this trend, reminiscent of Carven’s pink cover-ups and just the thing to keep you the picture of elegance this winter.
