DKNY Takes Things Old School, New School, Chic With Street…
DKNY takes things old school, new school, chic with street…
“OLD school, new school, chic with street… sick to slick” read the show notes for yesterdays DKNY AW14 show in New York City, perfectly summing up the aesthetic direction in eight simple words. The show was titled “New York Mash Up,” capturing the constant, sweeping NY spirit with a heavy dose of urbane charm.
The underlying palette was monochrome, New Yorkers, not unlike London natives, have a penchant for inky blacks, with pops of yellow, grey and navy weaving through. There were collegiate nuances in the form of oversized letterman jackets and logos from last season gave way to simple monogramming, with oversized D’s adorning humble black sweatshirts.
The label unveiled sporty silhouettes and heavy oversized coats. Beautiful liquid leather skirts, fell fluidly below the knee to slouchy, wide legged trousers that led the way for a divine three-piece trouser suit in grey marl. The air of insouciance was just the right side of rebellious, with furry hoods adding a luxe finish to quilted black parkers and the fuzzy, humbug striped shearlings are a perfect blend of old school glam with new school edge.
Nestled between the urban staples there were a few surprises, including a blue houndstooth dress with a waterfall hem and splashes of flirty girlish pink. We adore the neon lace minidress; “There’s nothing better to wear to light up the city,” says Donna, and we’re inclined to agree.
