Trend Alert: Precious Metals
Now that Spring is officially upon us, it’s time to ditch those tights and embrace the warmer weather. A key trend we picked up from the SS14 shows was metallics, which are set to appear on every article of clothing that you own or are yet to own. Metallic is a beautifully loose term and gives you a lot to play with when dressing for the warmer season.
Christopher Kane showcased an incredible collection of metallic treats in his SS14 collection inspired by flowers and their biology. The early looks featured subtle silver and bright blue metallic cutouts in the shape of ‘sterilized petals’, and ventured into silver and gold dresses, a colour explosion on silver in one section and striking details on the shoes and even in the biology textbook appliquee. Christopher Kane’s AW14 offering followed with more metallics spliced in with the bold direction of the collection, so take note, shiny things are here to stay.
Another designer working his magic with metallics was Jason Wu over in New York, who sent a variety of shimmering gems down the runway. Opening with a demure pale gold shining on split hem skirts and loose vests, he quickly segued into a palette of blue gradually getting darker. In contrast, a seemingly black palette left nowhere to hide for the two bold gold metallic mini dresses that stormed the runway at Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. The asymmetric dresses were equal parts brash and fantastic and echoed back to the eighties circa Debbie Harry, who we can definitely see rocking one of the looks on the red carpet.
There are some great options on the high street for metallics, but our favourite pioneer in metals for SS14 is Whistles, and the best part is the collection walks straight off the runway and into stores at a much more purse friendly price tag. The key focus for Whistles was the look of Casual Lustre, an LA poolside glam that wouldn’t look out of place at the Beverly Hills Hotel paired with either chic pool slides or a pointed toe court. The sports luxe silver foil separates work to perfection when worn together for an uber low maintenance vibe, or we love the contrast of black on the soft fabric. Whistles have also taken it one step further with a stunning silver backpack that demands your attention and is the perfect companion for the upcoming Coachella festival to store your festival essentials in style.
