How to Style the Ultimate Vintage Summer Look

When refreshing your wardrobe for summer, no doubt you’ll be looking at adding some brighter colours, lighter materials and new accessories into your collection.

Retro styles have been fashionable for a while, with nods to the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s becoming a popular choice for many. Shopping for vintage style women’s clothing can be tricky, so we’ve gathered our best tips to recreate the ultimate vintage summer look.

Summer shirts

To keep us cool during the hot weather, a cool cotton shirt might be better than a clingy polyester t-shirt. Effortlessly chic, a classic white or light coloured shirt can be worn tied up at the front, as a long dress or simply over jeans or leggings for a put-together, effortless look.

For a vintage style twist, wear a gingham patterned shirt and tie up at the front buttoned up to the top or left loose for a laid back, breezy image.

Light jackets

For summer evenings, avoid carrying heavy items with you on your adventures and instead take a light jacket, perhaps a stylish bomber jacket or vintage denim jacket, which you can wear from day to night.

Rather than hiding your outfit, these types of jackets can complement your summer style and brighten up your ensemble while keeping you cool enough in the sun but still warm in the evening.

Skirts

While the modern woman can wear whatever she likes (and look fabulous whatever the garment), skirts are traditionally part of the feminine image. They may be a popular choice for those opting for vintage style clothing.

Nowadays, anyone can wear a skirt, and we’re here for it! Pencil skirts, denim skirts, swing skirts, rockabilly with a tucked-in shirt, with a pair of retro heels, or a knee-length flowy number – whatever skirt you’re wearing this summer, make sure to find a vintage style that suits you and your vibe!

As time passed, skirts became shorter until miniskirts peaked in the early 2000s. Coined as ‘Y2 K’ fashion, these skirts will keep you super cool in summer and give your legs plenty of sun!

For a more classic vintage look, though, knee-length skirts paired with a statement belt have been a popular vintage style for decades and are very wearable to any occasion.

Accessories

The best thing about accessories is they can complete a look, no matter what the outfit. In summer, you might feel more daring, opting for bigger and brighter earrings, statement jewellery and makeup to match.

This summer, vintage style thick twisted gold earrings have been made famous by celebrities, often paired with a rectangle style pair of sunglasses worn at the bottom of the nose. This simple trick gives every outfit a polished feel, and for an extra vintage vibe, perhaps opt for a more oversized cat-eye style of sunnies, which were popular in the ’80s.

If you want to go a step further, try tying a light neckerchief to match the colour of your skirt or dress for a super classy, traditional look.

Reaching for the same shorts and t-shirt every day during summer might be tempting, but after reading these tips, you might feel inspired to purchase some more vintage style women’s clothing or change up some of the outfits in your wardrobe.

Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd! Vintage styles will never go out of fashion, and they almost always come back around in the end anyway.
