With everybody talking about the video that the Prince and Princess of Wales have released, there seems to be a lot of focus on the ring that Kate appears to be wearing in place of her engagement ring.
In the three-minute video, the Princess of Wales announces that she’s finished her course of chemotherapy. Reportedly filmed in Norfolk last month, the touching footage shows Kate and her family enjoying the outdoors and spending valuable time together.
Fans quickly spotted not only the absence of Kate’s iconic diamond and sapphire engagement ring, but also the presence of a new ring. But have we seen this one before? Jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have done some research…
Maxwell Stone commented: “While Kate’s engagement ring is undoubtedly her most iconic piece of jewellery, it wasn’t the first ring she received from Prince William. During their university days, William gave Kate a promise ring, and though it’s hard to be certain, recent footage of the royal couple suggests she may be wearing this sentimental piece again.
The ring is set on a rose gold Victorian band, featuring two garnets – Kate’s birthstone – and pearls to represent William’s June birthstone. Unlike Kate’s 12-carat engagement ring – which she typically removes during physical activities, sports, or any situation where there’s an increased risk of damage or loss – this ring is more practical for daily wear.
Kate has also previously removed her engagement ring when visiting hospitals for health and safety reasons. Since the Princess has just completed her chemotherapy, this may explain her choice to switch to a different ring. It could also symbolise a fresh beginning – an especially fitting gesture, as it was the ring William gifted her to mark the start of their relationship.
While its sentimental value is priceless, I would estimate the monetary worth of Kate’s promise ring to be around £1,500.”
