7 Movies and TV Shows That Will Help Get Your Fall Style on Track

Fall really is the greatest season isn’t it. Though the weather ranges can be a bit tough when deciding what to wear every day, for the most part it is a great time for fashion. It is also a great time to curl up in bed with a nice cup of tea and watch your favourite fall movies. They will make you laugh, cry and get inspired sartorially! Here are some of the greatest fall-themed movies and how they can inspire your OOTD.

When Harry Met Sally

Meg Ryan is really the queen of fall. Both of these films take us through multiple seasons but the actress really shines in the fall. Sally Albright is all about the mock turtleneck sweaters, jeans paired with boots and even a wide brim hat. Both characters love pairing their best fall sweater with a skirt. Try this kicky black leather skirt from Banana Republic Factory with a robust chunky sweater

You’ve Got Mail

Now it is time to channel your inner Kathleen Kelly. With her, it’s all about the pea coats. The barn jacket is this year’s equivalent (like this gorgeous waxed one from Mango), but you can still pair it with a skirt and some fun loafers like these chic, simple ones from COS. Kathleen was also the epitome of chic in her black quarter-length sleeve turtleneck at the cocktail party when she learns Joe Fox is, in fact, Joe Fox. Grab a cute scarf and a Starbucks latte and you are good to go.

Gilmore Girls

Evem though of course Gilmore Girls also spanned seasons, in my head it is always fall in Stars Hollow. Lorelai was more of a winter gal with those tiny, ridiculous scarves but Rory was all about fall. After all, she was a student for the entire duration of the series so she could wear those cozy sweaters and jeans pretty much all the time. You can get almost an exact replica of her favourite long sweater from L.L. Bean. She also loved a long elegant coat (the Thanksgiving episode where they had five meals) and in her later years she embraced some really fun skirt and tights ensembles.

The Craft

If you love the 90’s bohemian style of the cult hit The Craft you are in luck because that is Anthropologie’s vibe this fall. Think billowy poet’s plouses, sheer romantic skirts and lots of whimsical hats. You don’t have to create your own coven to look good in this balloon sleeved smocked blouse or this velvet collared shirt which Neve Campbell would definitely wear in the film or on Party of Five. And you won’t need witchy powers to make the most popular boy fall in love with you in this Caroline Tie-Neck Mini Dress.

Autumn in New York

Terrible movie but oh the beautiful fashion. Honestly some of the best coats you’ve ever seen on screen. I don’t even mind that Richard Gere wears his with a Henley shirt. And yes Winona is dying (kinda vaguely) in this 2000 drama, but damn her fragile dresses are all gorgeous and she even pulls of a head piece. But then she throws a coat over it and she’s just gorgeous. Step up your coat game like this one from Anne Klein.

Northern Exposure

This quintessential 90s show was probably before your time but it captured the fashion zeitgeist in that everyone, even if they lived in a large city, dressed like they were in a tiny town in Alaska. Moose prints, fleeces, shackets, boots, trucker hats and barn jackets dominated this show. Watch a few episodes on Amazon Prime and you will immediately feel inspired to grab a barn jacket, some Hoka hiking sneakers and an Aviator Nation trucker hat.

Gossip Girl

And now for the complete opposite of the 90s Alaskan wilderness aesthetic is the Gossip Girl-esque style of the fall. Opt for Serena’s effortlessly cool aesthetic with a stylish trench coat and knee-high boots like these ones from Chloe, or channel Blair’s preppy charm with a statement headband and structured dress. Plaid is always a fall staple and as Taylor Swift showed us at the VMAs this year, it can make quite the statement.
