How to Style 2024’s Most Coveted Trends

This year we’ve seen a resurgence of 90s and 00s inspiration with ballet flats, Mary Janes and the classic denim sets when it comes to fashion trends of 2024. M&S’ latest survey of over 2,000 Brits investigated what people think of these trends as well as additional shopping habits, revealing retro-inspired looks, blending comfort, style, and timeless classics, are some of the most loved options for shoppers across the country.

Ballet flats: the noughties favourites are more popular than ever

Assigned to the style wilderness since the mid-noughties, the humble ballet pump is now firmly back as everyone’s favourite footwear go-to.

M&S’s survey revealed that ballet flats ranked second only to denim among Brits, with 9% of respondents choosing them as their go-to footwear. Among 18-24-year-olds, ballet flats were 9% more popular than with older age groups, demonstrating their enduring appeal for Gen Z.

Searches for “ballet flats outfit” have also surged on Pinterest, with 88% of users searching these phrases in the 18-34 age bracket.

From square-toed designs to Mary Jane-inspired flats, the classic ballet flat is this year’s must-have shoe and deserves a place in every wardrobe. Fashion-forward consumers are finding new ways to style ballet flats, even during the colder months.

For a stylish winter look, pair ballet flats with thick wool socks or tights for warmth,” suggests Lisa Illis – Head of Design at M&S. “Opt for bold, colourful flats to add a pop of vibrancy to your winter outfits or embrace neutral tones for a timeless appeal that goes with everything.

“To elevate the look, add a wide, colourful scarf –perfect for complementing the season’s must-have neutrals.”

Among younger audiences, the preference for denim and ballet flats is even stronger. 40% of 18-24-year-olds named denim as their top trend of 2024, proving it’s a timeless classic to keep in your wardrobe year after year.

Timeless classics meet modern elegance

M&S’ survey revealed denim remains a favourite, chosen by 19% of respondents, and its enduring appeal continues to evolve. The addition of ballet flats offers a fresh twist on this classic look.

Denim and ballet flats complement each other perfectly—while denim provides a casual yet chic foundation, ballet flats add an elegant touch, making this combination effortlessly stylish,” said Lisa. “Both pieces also work beautifully on their own, offering endless outfit possibilities.

Interestingly, 50% of participants stated they either didn’t know or didn’t like any specific trend, hinting at a growing individuality in fashion choices. This shift reflects the increasing importance of personal style – shoppers are exploring ways to incorporate timeless staples, into their own personal looks.

What’s driving fashion choices as we head into 2025?

When it comes to purchasing decisions, price continues to be the most significant factor, with 58% of respondents saying it’s their top consideration, followed by quality at 46%.

For women aged 25-34, trendiness and social media have become more notable influences, with 14% citing social media as a key driver of their fashion choices.

It’s all about the investment piece

When it comes to wardrobe investment, coats and jackets topped the list, with 31% of respondents stating they spend the most on these items, followed by tops (28%) and dresses (21%).

While 18-24-year-olds are less inclined to splurge on outerwear, with only 13% saying they invest in coats and jackets, 25-34-year-olds are more likely to spend on accessories like jewellery (+8% compared to the national average).

Coats and jackets continue to be a key wardrobe staple that our customers are willing to invest in,” said Lisa, “especially as we transition into Winter. These pieces offer both functionality and style.
