NEXT’s Stylists Provide 5 Ways to Wear Suede this Autumn

Suede is the material of the moment and with searches for suede staples still on the rise (+40% this month) we teamed up with Next to share their top picks with you, to give you the inspiration you need in order to adopt the trend this autumn.

According to Google searches, the most sought-after piece for Brits’ wardrobes is a suede coat, with searches for the item up 2796%. Other items with increasing search demand include suede bags (+126%) and suede clogs (+43%).

With a new trend inevitably come the questions on how best to style it. Combining different pieces in the material is one option when it comes to styling suede but another thing to consider is the colour. Styling different shades of suede allows you to play with the tone of your outfit.

Pairing a tan jacket with denim will give a classic laid-back look. Burgundy or khaki suede will add a bold, sophisticated touch to your outfit and work well contrasted with leather-look fabrics. Neutral shades like stone or grey are perfect for transitional outfits, whilst a chocolate-coloured suede will add depth.

Suede maintenance tips

Suede pieces can be expensive, so if you’re investing in new items you’ll want to know how to make them last, season after season.

Although more than half of Brits (53%) own something suede in their wardrobe, over two-thirds (68%) don’t actually know how to clean suede. So, the experts at Next have put together some simple tips to keep your clothes and accessories looking their best all season.

  1. Don’t use water – Using water can leave watermarks and may also cause the material to become stiff. If you were to get suede wet, use a towel to blot it dry. You should let the material air dry and do not use heat.
  2. A pencil rubber – By using a rubber gently on small scuffs and stains marks can be lifted. This should be followed by brushing the area to lift the nap back up.
  3. White vinegar – Water cannot be used on suede but white vinegar can be used to remove stains. Using a soft cloth dampened with the vinegar you should gently rub a stain to lift it. You should then allow it to air dry, before using a suede brush to restore the nap.
  4. A suede brush – If you own something suede you should make sure to invest in a suede brush. Alternatively, you can use a clean, soft toothbrush. If the suede gets scuffed gently, brush it in the direction of the grain to remove dirt and lift the nap.
