Over the last 12 months, many past trends have come back into the spotlight, from double denim to ballet flats. Among these, boho is seeing a resurgence. According to a recent M&S survey, it ranked in the top three most-loved trends for UK women in 2024, with Google searches for the style up by +30% in the last week alone.

What is boho style?

The bohemian or ‘boho’ look draws its roots for the 1960s and 70s. It became known for its relaxed, earthy vibe and playful patterns, showcased by the likes of Stevie Nicks and Patty Smith. It then made a reappearance in the 90’s and 00’s, fronted by Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller. It often features flowing shapes and natural tones, giving it an easy-going, artsy feel.

Key pieces include brown suede boots, crochet cardigans, lace tops, and flared jeans. This style is all about celebrating individuality and freedom. In 2024, the trend is back but perhaps not in the way you expect.

Boho and the return of classic trends

Fashion trends and styles have always been circular, with different styles returning to popularity every few decades. It’s now boho’s turn. However, this time it has a grown-up twist. This season, the boho look is less about excessive accessories and more about relaxed elegance and more intricate details.

As Jessica Rae Long, Creative Stylist at M&S explains: “The resurgence of boho feels more refined – floaty, and comfortable paired with staples that everyone has in their wardrobe. This season’s must-haves include oversized blouses, flowy dresses, earthy tones, delicate embroidery, and a mix of suede and leather.

“While boho style still embraces a free-spirited, mix-and-match aesthetic, it’s now about pairing these elements with timeless wardrobe staples for a look that’s contemporary, chic, and wearable without feeling costume-like.”

How to achieve the boho look in 2025

To help you bring this modern take on boho style into your wardrobe, YCB spoke with M&S expert and Creative Stylist Jessica Rae Long, who shares their top tips and essential pieces:

  1. Flowy silhouettes and layered fabrics

“Boho today is all about relaxed sophistication. Opt for loose silhouettes like maxi skirts, flowy dresses, wide-leg trousers, and oversized shapes like our Cupro High Neck Ruffle Midaxi Tiered Dress. Mixing textures like silk, linen, and cotton gives that perfect layered look without feeling overdone.”

  1. Earthy tones with a pop of colour

“Warm and earthy shades like browns, greens, creams, and rust serve as the perfect fit for the classic boho palette. One piece that comes to mind is the V-Neck Frill Detail Midaxi Smock Dress in maroon with frill detailing is a favourite. Adding touches of turquoise, mustard, or gold brings a vibrant, modern twist while keeping things cohesive.”

  1. Embroidery and prints

“Today’s boho keeps prints and details understated but impactful. Look for pieces with nature-inspired prints or subtle embroidery, like our Floral V-Neck Midaxi Column Dress which balances earthy colours with intricate, eye-catching designs.”

  1. Statement Accessories

“To finish the look, accessories are key. Try a fringed bag, oversized scarf, leather belts, and layered jewellery. Suede or leather boots add texture; the Suede Block Heel Knee High Boots offer a practical, stylish option with their versatile brown shade and comfortable block heel.”
