6 Ways to Wear the Bow Trend
Bows are no longer reserved for Christmas presents as head of womenswear at M&S, Lisa Illis, explains.
From cutesy hair accessories to show-stopping, oversized adornments, bows are a key trend for AW24. Here, Lisa Illis, head of womenswear design at M&S shares advice for channelling this trend:
“Bows are no longer simply a cutesy adornment reserved for hair clips and heels. This season, we’re seeing ribbons and bows on everything from blouses to festive jumpers.”
If you’re in agreement that it’s time to reclaim the bow, here’s how to wear the trend as we step into winter…
1. Maximalist hair accessories
“Oversized hair accessories such as scrunchies have been having a moment in recent years. And this season is all about XXL bows in the hair. Far from the accessories you may remember from your school days, these chic additions can be used to elevate any hairstyle.
“Adorn a half-up, half-down style with a satin bow or pearl hair clip. Or keep a slicked back look in place with some faux leather slides.”
2. Shoes
“From high street to high end, many of the ballet pumps that are so popular this season feature a charming, understated bow. Similarly, we’re also seeing bows on the ballet flat’s heeled cousin, the slingback.”
3. Party in the back
“When it comes to partywear, one thing that unites many of our sell-out party dresses this season is they feature big, beautiful bows at the back. As well as looking pretty and playful, this is ideal if you’re trying to exude quiet luxury.
“Quiet luxury is both about feminine, timeless style and making smart choices. By investing in fewer, higher-quality pieces and caring for them properly, you can create a wardrobe that lasts a lifetime, both in terms of durability and style.”
4. Scandi-style blouses
“The iconic Copenhagen-style blouse has paved the way for a host of bow-adorned shirts and blouses. Alongside the classic puff sleeve variety, there are a whole range of new silhouettes which are perfect for layering.
“Anything with bow tie closures at the front is always a winner for me. But there are some stunning styles with bows on the sleeves to consider this season too.”
5. Budget-friendly jewellery
“Bow jewellery is the perfect way to dip your toe into the trend, without breaking the bank. Opt for bow stud earrings for on-the-go comfort or drop earrings for special occasion impact.”
6. Bow gifting
“If you’re searching for on-trend gifts for women, M&S have a plethora to choose from. Christmas classics include a three-pack of bow ankle socks, bow-print pyjama sets and designer handbags.”
