Here’s What an Expert Thinks Selena’s Ring is Worth (and 3 Secrets No-one’s Noticed Yet)

How much did new fiancé Benny Blanco spend on that beautiful sparkler?

It’s official: pop queen and star actress Selena Gomez is engaged to her boyfriend of a year and a half, hit producer Benny Blanco. Rumors have been swirling around the pair for months after several Instagram photos showed Selena wearing a ring on that special finger, but on Wednesday night, she made it official. Posting to her Instagram, she showed off her exquisite marquise-cut diamond, along with the caption, “Forever begins now…”.

The internet is abuzz with questions – including just how much her new fiancé shelled out for that beauty! Here to reveal all the hidden secrets of Selena’s ring is Blake Asaad, the founder of GOODSTONE, a leading provider of exquisitely crafted diamond jewellery.

So How Much Is It Worth?

Already, speculation has begun over how much Benny spent on Selena’s beautiful ring. The figure most experts seem to be landing on is around $1 million (£800,000), a figure Blake agrees with. “Given the quality of the central diamond and the addition of smaller diamonds in a pavé (ring) around the band, I would say $1 million is a great estimate,” says Blake.

“The key to estimating a diamond’s worth isn’t just its size,” Blake explains. “Its colour and lack of imperfections also come into play.” Diamonds, just like other gemstones, are measured in carats. Blake estimates that the main marquise-cut stone on Selena’s ring is probably around eight carats.

“Given the clarity and lack of imperfections, the ring might be graded VVS1, one of the highest grades a diamond can achieve,” Blake tells us. “It’s also completely clear, which means it might be graded in the D-F range, again one of the highest ratings. Taken together, this means the stone was likely very pricey.”

The Secrets No One’s Noticed About The Ring (Yet)

Many have already picked up on the particular cut of Selena’s diamond, the marquise cut, being a reference to one of her hit songs. On the track ‘Good For You,’ Selena refers to herself as a marquise diamond, so the cut is just perfect for her. But what else does the stone – and the band around it – symbolise?

“The ring’s unique craftsmanship suggests it was a bespoke design, so I think there’s a lot more personal significance than might at first meet the eye,” says Blake.

The Deeper Symbolism Of The Marquise Diamond

The marquise cut’s oval shape and pointed ends add elegance to whichever finger it adorns, but they have a deeper meaning. “The pointed ends of the marquise cut resemble an arrow or a flame, often interpreted as symbols of forward momentum and passion,” says Blake. “The elongated form of the stone can also represent growth.”

“Both of these meanings relate to Selena. In her personal life, she’s moving forward into a new chapter as she’s getting married. In her professional life, she’s transitioning from music to acting, a choice she’s been very enthusiastic about, especially with the popularity of her hit show Only Murders In The Building. That’s why I think Benny’s choice of cut could be more than a nod to her hit song – it shows he truly understands the journey she’s on.”

What’s Behind The Band?

Selena’s ring is made of warm yellow gold and features a pavé of diamonds. A pavé is the technical term for when a series of stones are set close together in a line, usually around the band of a ring.

“Gold has a lot of symbolism behind it,” says Blake. “It could symbolise that Selena’s won first place in Benny’s heart, of course, but I think it goes deeper than that. Gold’s value is everlasting, from ancient civilisations all the way until today. I think that enduring, immortal quality is what Benny’s going for.”

And let’s not forget that beautiful band! In addition to adding value and beauty to the ring, the pavé setting reflects light from every angle, which could represent the all-encompassing, complete nature of their love story.

A Poignant Combo

The marquise diamond, with its sharp ends, juxtaposed against the delicate pavé setting and yellow gold band, might symbolise the duality of Selena’s public persona. “She is bold and tenacious, yet soft and deeply caring—qualities Benny has highlighted with the ring’s design.

“Everything about this ring’s design proves that he gets her on a deep level – and I think it shows they’re meant to be.”

“The marquise cut has been a classic ever since it was first commissioned in the 18th century. The legend goes that King Louis XV of France had the marquise cut designed to resemble the smile of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, more famously known as the Madame de Pompadour. As well as adding a royal touch to their romance, the cut could imply that Selena shares the famous intellect of that glamorous French aristocrat.”
