Dressing Down for New Years Eve as 25 million Britons Stay in

December 17, 2024

Loungewear inspiration as new survey reveals over a third of Britons are staying in this New Year’s Eve.

As the festive season is approaching quickly now, many are thinking about their plans for New Year’s Eve – but more importantly, their outfits!

A new survey conducted by M&S has revealed more than a third (36%) of Britons plan to stay in this New Year’s Eve. In fact, only 1 in 10 (11%) plan to ring in 2025 at a house party. What’s perhaps most surprising is that even younger generations are planning to skip the night out with more than a quarter (27%) of those who plan to stay at home aged 18-24.

Many countries have New Year’s Eve traditions that centre around what they wear. In Brazil, for example, people gather in white, symbolising peace and good fortune. In the Philippines, wearing polka dots on 31st December is said to bring luck. Meanwhile, in the US, it’s said you should wear red underwear if you’re looking for love the following year.

When asked what they wish to wear to celebrate a new year, comfort was key for the majority. 27% want to wear something ‘casual but stylish’ and 22% want to wear loungewear and pyjamas specifically. Again, surprisingly rather than dresses, loungewear and pyjamas is the New Year’s Eve dress-code of choice for women.

If you’re planning to say goodbye to 2024 from the comfort of your own home, here are M&S’ top-rated loungewear and pyjama options.
