Three in Four Brits Say Having NYE at Home is More Fun Than Going Out

December 27, 2024

For nearly three-quarters (74%) of Brits, being at home is the preferred choice for New Year’s Eve, with only 7% planning on going out to a bar or club this year and 7% saying they’ll be going out for dinner.

With nightlife culture becoming less popular, Brits are opting for staying in with friends and family to welcome in the new year. As a result, there has been a 25% increase in Google searches for ‘New Years In’ over the last month.

One-quarter (25%) of those staying in are still planning on dressing up for the occasion. So, experts at Next have shared their advice with us on how to create the perfect New Year’s Eve at home, with styling tips for however you’re choosing to celebrate.

Cosy night in

“If you’re planning to spend the last day of the year watching your favourite film and relaxing on the sofa, comfort is key. A great outfit for a cosy night in would be a knitted loungewear set or a tracksuit. Wearing co-ordinating items is a simple and easy way to feel put together whilst also feeling comfortable.

“Create the perfect atmosphere with soft, warm lighting using candles and lamps to set the mood. Plump your cushions and layer the sofa with a soft blanket or throw and use a tray on your coffee table or footstool to store all your favourite snacks!”

Casual drinks

“If you’re hosting or going to a low-key gathering, wearing jeans or trousers with a dressier top in a festive material like velvet or satin makes a casual but comfortable outfit option. Keep it cosy and comfy by wearing fluffy fur-lined slippers or clogs if you’re in the house.

“For hosts, a casual gathering is easy to cater for. Choose a space for socialising that allows everyone to sit together, this might mean moving some furniture around but helps to encourage conversation. Set up a table or bar cart for drinks and snacks to let guests help themselves.”

Glamorous party

“For a more formal or glamorous event, opt for fun and timeless party staples like metallic dresses and sequin skirts. If you’re an active host, a jumpsuit makes a great option to allow for more freedom of movement. Pair your outfit with statement accessories like sparkly earrings or a bold necklace. Comfortable footwear, such as block heels or elegant flats, are also a must since you’ll likely be on your feet all night.

“If you’re hosting a NYE party, set the mood with the atmosphere – dim lighting with candles, fairy lights, a gorgeous home scent spray and a party playlist that fits your vibe. If you’re sitting down for a meal, use centrepieces and colour-themed tablescaping for a sophisticated setting.”

Celebrating in your sleep

“Make staying in your comfies feel more glamorous by opting for a satin pyjama set and your cosiest slippers. If you still feel like making an effort, styling your hair and adding touches of make up can help this comfy outfit to feel more elevated and chic for a NYE in.

“Before settling down ensure the mood is right, dim the lights, light your favourite candle and take a warm bath to fully switch off and relax.”
