How the Right Lingerie Can Boost Confidence and Style

How the Right Lingerie Can Boost Confidence and Style

February 19, 2025

Whether it’s a perfectly fitting bra or a beautifully designed matching set, the right lingerie can provide comfort, boost confidence, and enhance self-expression.

Shop Lingerie Sets

New research from M&S has uncovered how lingerie shopping habits are evolving in the UK, with a growing emphasis on not just comfort and practicality, but also confidence, empowerment and self-expression.

A nationwide survey highlights that while many UK shoppers still purchase lingerie out of necessity – 73% replace worn-out items – a growing number of shoppers are thinking beyond the basics seeking lingerie to feel good in their own skin. Nearly a quarter (24%) buy lingerie for a confidence boost.

Comfort and confidence go hand in hand

Despite a growing appreciation for stylish lingerie, comfort remains non-negotiable, with 51% of shoppers ranking it as the most important factor in their purchasing decisions. Fit follows at 28%, reinforcing the idea that well-fitted lingerie is key to both looking and feeling great. But shoppers no longer believe comfort and style are mutually exclusive – modern lingerie is expected to do both.

“At M&S, our collections are designed to ensure women never have to choose between feeling comfortable and looking stylish. There are five design factors which are critical to every piece of lingerie we create: comfort; fit, support; silhouette; and style. The customer is at the heart of everything we do with regular feedback helping us to develop our inclusive collection, encompassing modern everyday essentials to confidence-boosting statement pieces.,” says Soozie Jenkinson, head of design at M&S.

Beyond everyday wear, lingerie also plays a role in special moments, with one in five respondents (20%) reporting that they purchase lingerie for special occasions.

Mixing, matching, and coordinating styles

Shoppers are embracing lingerie as a form of self-expression, with 84% preferring to mix and match their bras and pants. However, younger generations are leading a shift toward coordinated styling, with 48% of 18-34-year-olds opting for matching lingerie sets.

“Responding to the global trend towards matching lingerie, most of our bras now have the option of matching knickers. If you are looking to make a statement, there are so many gorgeous matching sets to choose from.

“Our Boutique range is playful, colourful and on trend with gorgeous details such as animal print, mesh and lace, while our Rosie Exclusively for M&S collection (created in collaboration with model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) is luxurious, elegant and feminine. Autograph lingerie is modern in styling with exquisite attention to detail,” adds Soozie.

“Our sleek Body range is designed to fit like a second skin, disappearing under clothes with minimal seaming and maximum smoothing.”

How to find lingerie that makes you feel your best

If you’re unsure where to start, finding lingerie that fits well is the first step to feeling confident. M&S offers expert guidance both online and in-store, including bra fitting services to help you discover the perfect size.

  • Know your fit – check the labels of your best-fitting bras as a starting point. Bra sizes consist of a band measurement (e.g. 38) and a cup size (e.g. DD), while bralettes and knickers follow standard clothing sizes (e.g. 14) or general sizing (XS-XL).
  • Choose styles that suit you – whether you prefer the lift of a plunge bra, the support of a balcony style, or the effortless ease of a lace bralette, the right lingerie can enhance both your shape and your confidence. Check out our guides to the most flattering bras for bigger busts and small busts for more expert tips.
  • Experiment with colour and texture – lingerie doesn’t have to be purely practical. Trying new styles, from soft pastels to bold lace designs, can be an easy way to feel more empowered in your everyday wardrobe.

“Lingerie is more than a foundation to your wardrobe. It’s a powerful tool for self-expression, confidence, style and comfort. At M&S, we understand that women want lingerie that reflects both their lifestyle and their personal style. That’s why we continue to innovate, ensuring our collections always combine style, practicality, and the highest quality,” adds Soozie.
