Can You Pull Off Butter Yellow? A Colour Analyst Weighs In
With the M&S three-piece butter yellow suit taking over our timelines and FYP’s and stars like Coco Gauff, Zoey Deutch and even Timothee Chalamet rocking the tone on Oscars red carpet earlier this year, butter yellow seems to be the perfect antidote to our whites and beiges…
But is butter yellow for everyone?
We sat down with Colour Analyst and Personal Stylist Sian Clarke and Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at online fashion destination SilkFred who have shared their thoughts on Spring’s hottest trend, how to style it and insights on why butter yellow has seen a rise in popularity this season.

“Butter yellow is a soft and delicate warm shade of yellow that harmonises with a warm skin tone. The best season for this on-trend colour is a spring season. It will look beautiful on a spring worn near the face and even head to toe in a stunning maxi dress.” Sian comments.
“If someone falls into the autumn season, which is also someone who has a warm complexion but a more metallic looking skin tone, butter yellow will look stunning if it’s worn as part of a print with more autumnal shades in or as an accessory.”
“If someone has a cool complexion and falls into summer, I’d recommend wearing butter yellow below the waistline. A full maxi skirt or wide leg flare with a white shirt would complement the colour well on a summer complexion.”
“For winters who want to wear butter yellow, again wear away from the face, such as a shoe, boot or bag. Alternatively, knitwear with a low neckline and a silver necklace to cool the tint down and harmonise with their complexion.” Sian recommends.
On the psychology of Butter Yellow, Sian reveals:
“Butter yellow has wonderful physiological impacts on our nervous system. When we wear it, it activates the left part of our brain where we do our deep thinking so it will aid concentration, decision making and help with clarity. It’s also the happiest colour, it reminds us of the sunshine and warmer times so it’s perfect on one of those rainy transeasonal days where we need a mood boost.”
Expert commentary from SilkFred’s Head Stylist, Megan Watkins, on the Butter Yellow trend:
“As we transition into spring, adding this soft, indulgent colour into your everyday outfits is a great way to update and elevate your Spring fashion game. Guaranteed to please maximalists and minimalists alike, butter yellow will add some much needed sunshine into your everyday wardrobe.” Megan reveals.
“The reason why this shade works so well is because, whilst being a definitive colour, is still technically a neutral. Whilst this tone adheres to current vibrant trends like pops of colour, it’s also incredibly versatile – pairing fantastically with wardrobe staples like denim and white.”
“We’ve also seen butter yellow in prominent beauty and interior trends too, adding softness and a sense of nostalgia. As the seasons transition, many of us are swapping out classic red for butter yellow as our manicure of choice.”

Tips on how to style Butter Yellow:
“As wedding season ramps up, a butter yellow wedding guest outfit should be at the top of all of our wish lists. This girly hue will look great with feminine silhouettes – think full skirts, silky slip dresses and corset-inspired styles. These will look great with white shoes and a matching manicure. Alternatively, a butter yellow pinstripe two-piece suit matched with striking gold jewellery is a great choice if you’re not a fan of dresses.” Megan recommends.
“If you’re looking for a less formal butter yellow outfit, I would experiment with dresses in trending prints such as gingham or abstract florals for that ultimate springtime vibe.”
“This soft hue will also work well with soft fabrics. Think fluffy cropped cardigans, cashmere jumpers to drape over your shoulders and ribbed tees, which will make a great base for any spring outfit.”
“In order to incorporate more butter yellow into your everyday outfits, just swap out your usual neutrals for this sunshine-inspired shade. It also pairs well with neutrals such as khaki and cream, so you can also use accessories to brighten up these outfits. A crossbody yellow bag or slingbacks in this shade is a great way to get this indulgent colour into your Spring wardrobe.” Megan concludes.
