The Secret to Happiness? Be More Yorkshire!

Straight-talking, friendly, down-to-earth and proud…these are all personality traits we associate with Yorkshire. And now new research, released by nationwide communications provider Plusnet today on Yorkshire Day (1 August), reveals they may be the key to a happier life, wherever you are in the UK.

Here, TV psychologist Emma Kenny looks at top four ‘Yorkshire’ personality traits and how they may make you happier.

Straight-talking

Whilst having a straight-talking approach to life might seem too blunt for our British sensitivities, new research from Plusnet reveals that a Yorkshire attitude could help improve our happiness. It’s probably at the top of this list for a reason, so, the next time you’re pulled in to a meeting at work that’s dragging on and on, try a straight-talking approach to get out faster. There’s no need for your recently brewed cuppa to go cold…

Friendly

This has to be my favourite addition to this list, being more Yorkshire also means being friendlier and turning that frown upside down. Being friendly is often about the little things, such as listening to your bff and being there when she/he is going through a though time or inviting your friends around for one of the many roasts you’ve been having or a nice brew.

Proud

Certainly, easier said than done, but having a little more pride is a Yorkshire trait that we could all adopt. According to Plusnet’s research, 50% of people from Yorkshire believe they’re a proud lot, and they certainly have lots to shout about, from their friendly attitudes, beautiful landscape and Yorkshire puddings. Just remember that pride isn’t the same as arrogance. After all, our Yorkshire brothers and sisters are known for their friendliness as much as they are for their pride. And more importantly, it’s good for your mood too. Take note fellow Brits – Plusnet’s research shows that people who identify as being friendly and proud are 5% happier (81%) than the national happiness average (76%).

Down-to-earth

If you’ve followed all of the above, you may be forgiven for becoming slightly smug. However, being more Yorkshire means remaining down-to-earth, no matter how friendly, proud and straight-talking you’ve become. It may sound like a feat that only the good people of Yorkshire can manage, but you’ll be four per cent happier if you put your mind to it!
